CBS NEWS 60 MINUTES Aug 24, 2025, Recently surfaced 9/11 evidence was not shared with FBI field agents or top intelligence officials. Evidence has emerged that could change our understanding of the 9/11 terrorist attacks nearly 24 years ago. The evidence was turned over to the FBI in the weeks after 9/11, but, as we first reported in April, it was never shared with the bureau's own field agents or top intelligence officials. Why after all these years did this crucial information just surface? The evidence came to light as part of a long-running lawsuit against the Saudi government by the families of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks, and it includes a chilling video of a Saudi national spy Omar Bayoumi filming the U.S. Capitol. Investigators believe the pre-operational surveillance in Washington DC was for the 9/11 attacks. Federal officials and former FBI agents believe the U.S. Capitol was the intended target for United Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. United Airlines Flight 93 with hijack pilot Ziad Jarrah was supposed to crash into the Capitol building on Sept 11, 2001.

CBS News’ 60 Minutes presented a robust case that Saudi intelligence agent Omar al-Bayoumi served a critical role in the Kingdom’s support for al-Qaeda and – more importantly – upended the Kingdom’s gaslighting of the American people. “Bayoumi should be held to account and so, too, should the Saudi government for the broader network of Saudi government officials who collaborated to aid the 9/11 hijackers. Bayoumi did not act alone. He was one link in a chain —the evidence shows that he operated in close coordination with multiple other Saudi officials in providing essential assistance to the hijackers. Justice demands nothing less than full accountability for the full Saudi government support network that enabled the murder of nearly 3,000 Americans.

The 9/11 plaintiffs have further alleged that al Qaeda’s development into a sophisticated terrorist organization was fueled principally by financial and operational support from “da’wa organizations” established and sponsored by the Saudi government – commonly described as alleged “charities.” While President Biden signed an executive order last fall to declassify 9/11 evidence, the families of some 9/11 victims say they had to go through the British courts to get records and videos seized two decades ago from an alleged Saudi government operative that have never been public until now. "Why did it take 20 years for this information to see the light of day?" Brett Eagleson told CBS News senior investigative correspondent Catherine Herridge. He is leading a group of families fighting for the documents. He was 15 years old when his father, Bruce, was killed in the World Trade Center South Tower, and 20 years later, he wants his children to know what he calls "the secret of 9/11" and who was behind the plot to kill their grandfather. "Will the Justice Department now explain to the families and to America why they did not pursue charges against (Saudi national Omar) al-Bayoumi? And most astonishingly, why did this information come from the U.K. government and not our own FBI?"

It references a 2017 assessment by the FBI’s Arabian Peninsula Squad, which had concluded Omar Bayoumi was a “co-optee” of the Saudi General Intelligence Presidency, its secret service, he was a spy. It found the assistance given to 9/11 hijackers Hazmi and Mihdhar was consistent with a co-ordinated terrorist support operation, rather than a series of chance encounters, and involved individuals with official connections to Saudi Arabia. The 9/11 hijackers facilitator in San Diego CA during 2000 was Omar al-Bayoumi. A 510-page secret FBI report, written in 2017 and declassified last week without any fanfare by the FBI or Justice Department, concludes that the California-based Saudi spy, Omar al Bayoumi, not only helped several 9/11 hijackers to find housing in San Diego, but that there was a “50/50 chance” he “had advanced knowledge” of their deadly plans. For years, top FBI leaders and Justice Department officials kept this potentially explosive information secret, refusing to tell Congressional investigators, the 9/11 Commission and the more than 10,000 American citizens who had signed on to a massive federal lawsuit that seeks to link Saudi officials to 9/11. Before the 9/11 attacks, the FBI report says, Omar Bayoumi was on the payroll of Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud, the kingdom’s influential U.S. ambassador who was so close to the Bush administration and visited the White House so often that he was nicknamed “Bandar Bush.” The FBI concluded that Bayoumi regularly passed intelligence findings to Bandar. But the report does not say whether Bayoumi told Bandar that he had met with two members of Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda terror network who had flown to California in early 2000 to begin preparations for attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.“It’s exactly what we’ve been saying,” said James Kreindler, one of the lead attorneys in a lawsuit by more than 10,000 9/11 victims and relatives against the Saudi government. “Saudi government officials at a high level were integral to the 9/11 attacks.” Prince Bander, 73 who is now retired after moving from his U.S. ambassadorship to the head of the Saudi intelligence service and the Saudi National Security Council, and Omar Bayoumi, 63, both live in Saudi Arabia.

KSM denies that Saudis were chosen for the 9/11 plot to drive a wedge between the United States and Saudi Arabia, and stresses practical reasons for considering ethnic background when selecting operatives. He says that so many were Saudi because Saudis comprised the largest portion of the pool of recruits in the al Qaeda training camps. KSM estimates that in any given camp, 70 percent of the mujahideen were Saudi, 20 percent were Yemeni, and 10 percent were from elsewhere. Although Saudi and Yemeni trainees were most often willing to volunteer for suicide operations, prior to 9/11 it was easier for Saudi operatives to get into the United States. Like many other al Qaeda operatives, the Saudis who eventually became the muscle hijackers were targeted for recruitment outside Afghanistan- probably in Saudi Arabia itself. Al Qaeda recruiters, certain clerics, and-in a few cases-family members probably all played a role in spotting potential candidates. Several of the muscle hijackers seem to have been recruited through contacts at local universities and Imam's at Mosques. According to the head of one of the training camps in Afghanistan, some were chosen by unnamed Saudi sheikhs who had contacts with al Qaeda. Omari, for example, is believed to have been a student of a radical Saudi cleric named Sulayman al Alwan. His mosque, which is located in al Qassim Province, is known among more moderate clerics as a "terrorist factory." The province is at the very heart of the strict Wahhabi movement in Saudi Arabia. Saeed al Ghamdi and Mohand al Shehri also spent time in al Qassim, both breaking with their families. According to his father, Mohand al Shehri's frequent visits to this area resulted in his failing exams at his university in Riyadh. Saeed al Ghamdi transferred to a university in al Qassim, but he soon stopped talking to his family and dropped out of school without informing them. KSM claims that Bin Ladin could assess new trainees very quickly, in about ten minutes, and that many of the 9/11 hijackers were selected in this manner. Bin Ladin, assisted by Atef, personally chose all the future muscle hijackers for the planes operation, primarily between the summer of 2000 and April 2001. Upon choosing a trainee, Bin Ladin would ask him to swear loyalty for a suicide operation. After the selection and oath-swearing, the operative would be sent to KSM for training and the filming of a martyrdom video, a function KSM supervised as head of al Qaeda's media committee. As to targets on 9/11, Atta understood Bin Ladin's interest in striking the White House. Atta said he thought this target too difficult, but had tasked Hazmi and Hanjour to evaluate its feasibility and was awaiting their answer. Atta said that those two operatives had rented small aircraft and flown reconnaissance flights near the Pentagon. Atta explained that Hanjour was assigned to attack the Pentagon, Jarrah the Capitol, and that both Atta and Shehhi would hit the World Trade Center. If any pilot could not reach his intended target, he was to crash the plane. If Atta could not strike the World Trade Center, he planned to crash his aircraft directly into the streets of New York.

A CIA airstrike took out al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri — a mastermind of the 9/11 terror attacks — in Afghanistan over the weekend, the most significant and successful American counterterror operation since the killing of ISIS commander Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2019. Ayman al-Zawahiri was one of the plotters and financial strategists of the September 11th, 2001 terror attack on the USA. Ayman al-Zawahiri an Egyptian was involved in the selection of the 19 al Qaeda hijackers that commandeered the 4 planes on 9/11.
