New Gun Law HB 1509 Bill for Private Investigative & Security Services in Florida Goes Into Effect July 1st

New Gun Law HB 1509 Bill for Private Investigative & Security Services in Florida Goes Into Effect July 1st 2022, will allow Private Investigators to Carry a Concealed Firearm with only a CWP. Effect of the Bill, The bill allows private investigator licensees who do not have a Class "G" statewide firearm license to bear a firearm if the licensee has a license to carry concealed firearms issued pursuant to s. 790.06, F.S. Firearms are not permitted to be carried openly at any time by private investigators. The bill HB 1509 reduces the requirement to obtain a Class "G" Statewide Firearm License to carry a concealed weapon just about everyplace in the State of Florida for a private investigator or security officer. Private Investigators and Security Officers who work bodyguard details or other armed guard details need to be tested in their proficiency with a firearm at the range every year. I have a Class "G" license and I actually look forward to the yearly 8 hour refresher course and qualifying at the range with live rounds and under stress.

Currently there are 6,992 licensed private investigators in the State of Florida. There are 124,996 licensed security officers in the State of Florida. There are 809 concealed weapon of firearm licenses held by Circuit of County Judges. There are 6 concealed weapon of firearm licenses held by consular security officials of a foreign government that maintains diplomatic relations in the State of Florida. And there are 2,445,471 concealed weapon or firearm (CWP) license holders in the State of Florida or about 11% of the total 21,480,000 population of Florida. The bill HB 1509 authorizes Class “C” Private Investigator, Class “CC” Private Investigator Intern, Class “D” Security Officer licensees who are 21 years of age or older to carry a concealed firearm in the performance of their duties if they have been issued a Class “G” Statewide Firearm license, or have a license to carry a concealed firearm, or have not been issued a Class “G” Statewide Firearm license but are a retired law enforcement officer who served at least 10 years, separated from service in good standing, and "maintains the annual firearms proficiency qualification".

The Division of Licensing (Division) within DACS administers Florida's concealed weapon licensing program and oversees Florida's private investigative, private security, and recovery services industries. The Division's regulatory oversight of those services includes licensing, enforcing compliance standards, and ensuring public protection from unethical business practices and
unlicensed activity.
