According to the Raleigh Police Department, a woman, identified as Zoe Welsh, called 911 around 6:33 a.m. Saturday morning from her home on Clay Street to report that a man was inside her home. While Welsh was on the phone, the suspect began assaulting her. According to court documents, Camacho has a lengthy criminal history going back more than a decade in both Wake and Durham counties. On January 3, 2026, at 6:33 a.m., Raleigh Police Officers responded to a burglary at 819 Clay Street. The victim, identified as Zoe Welsh, called 911 to report that a man was inside her residence. While still on the phone with dispatch, the suspect began to assault her. Upon arrival, officers found Ms. Welsh suffering from life-threatening injuries. Then at 6:40 a.m., another officer reported, “I have a female down. She’s got a severe hemorrhage to the left side of her head.” Officers immediately rendered aid until she was transported to a local hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, Ms. Welsh died due to her injuries. Additional officers responded to the surrounding area and located the suspect, identified as Ryan Camacho. He was taken into custody without incident. Raleigh Police detectives interviewed the suspect and subsequently charged him with the murder of Zoe Welsh. Arrested: Ryan Camacho, 36 Charges: Murder, Felony Burglary.

Statement from Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce: “I am deeply heartbroken for this mother, friend, and mentor to many in our community, and for the unimaginable trauma her family must endure. We extend our deepest sympathy to Ms. Welsh's family during this incredibly difficult time. Whenever there is a loss of life in our community, it affects us all. As a department, we share in the sadness of this loss. The arrest of the suspect sends a strong message that criminal acts will not be tolerated in the City of Raleigh. I am profoundly grateful for the dedication and professionalism of the responding officers, whose swift and diligent actions led to the quick apprehension of the suspect in this case.” This investigation remains ongoing.
