Joanne Chesimard aka Assata Shakur is a member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA) an underground Black Nationalist terrorist organization largely comprised of former Black Panther Party members. The BLA was active in the US until at least 1981 when a Brinks truck robbery by several Black Liberation Army members and former members of the Weather Underground, Kathy Boudin, David Gilbert and Judith Alice Clark, left a guard and two police officers dead. Boudin, Gilbert and Clark along with several BLA and May 19 Communist Organization members, were subsequently arrested.
On November 2, 1979, Joanne Chesimard aka Assata Shakur escaped from prison and lived underground before being located in Cuba in 1984. She is a member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA) a terrorist organization. She is thought to currently still be living in Cuba. The Black Liberation Army (BLA) is a small terrorist group with ties to the Weather Underground Organization. The BLA, originating in 1971, has the two primary goals of killing police officers and expropriating funds from capitalists and imperialists to finance the revolution. Because of police officer murders and robberies of armored cars and banks, many BLA leaders and members have been incarcerated or killed. Although the group appeared to be dormant from the late 1970's to the early 1980's, recent events indicate a renewed enthusiasm for BLA goals.
