SARASOTA (CBSMiami/AP) — A 33-year old Florida man died in a hospital while in medical distress after being arrested, according to Sarasota County Sheriff’s officials. Officials on Friday said they are investigating the circumstances of John Kaafi’s arrest. Sarasota Police arrested Kaafi Wednesday during a traffic stop for a non-working tag light. Police said Kaafi acted suspiciously and went to detain him for “officer safety.” Police discovered a vial containing a substance that tested positive for cocaine. Officers also found spice, a designer drug, in the vehicle. While taking him to the jail, officials said Kaffi escaped by flinging himself out the cruiser window. They used a Taser on him. Police called an ambulance from the jail when Kaafi complained of an asthma attack. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
John Kaafi is a white male, last known address of 2517 Glebe Farm Close in Sarasota, and is receiving medical treatment at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Officer Juan Jaimes with SPD stopped a vehicle for a blown tag light near the intersection of Eighth Street and North Orange Avenue in Sarasota. Officers Adam Arena and Laura Markey arrived as Jaimes told Kaafi he was not under arrest but was being detained for officer safety. Jaimes handcuffed Kaafi’s left hand and he began to pull away when the officer reached for his other hand. Kaafi reportedly twisted his body and Jaimes wrestled him to the ground. While on the ground, Kaafi began thrashing his legs, making contact with Jaimes’ legs several times. Kaafi reportedly screamed he did not want to go to jail and lose custody of his children. While at the intersection of Fruitville Road and U.S. 301, John Kaafi asked the rear windows be put down in order to get some air. Jaimes lowered the rear/passenger side window halfway down and turned the A/C higher. While waiting in the eastbound turn lane of Ringling Boulevard and U.S. 301, Kaafi dove out of the rear passenger window and began running westbound in the 1900 block of Ringling Boulevard. James used a Taser on Kaafi while running after him with no visible effect. Kaafi tripped running across the median, was Tased again and two officers managed the arrest. John Kaafi had been charged with felony escape.
