WHAT THE HELL? Military veterans are sounding off about a Democratic congressional candidate who they say inflated his Navy record and used a deceased Korean War vet’s gravesite as a campaign prop. Ammar Campa al-Najjar — a candidate for an east San Diego congressional seat and boyfriend of billionaire Qualcomm heiress Rep. Sara Jacobs — is under fire for fudging details of his service to boost his campaign. 

Ammar Campa al-Najjar is a Palestinian-Mexican American Democratic politician the grandson of a infamous Palestinian terrorist who gained national attention for his 2018 congressional run in California's 50th District. Ammar al-Najjar is the grandson of Muhammad Yusuf al-Najjar (also known as Abu Yusuf), a high-ranking Palestinian terrorist of the Black September group who was one of the architects of the 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre.

Family Background: Ammar al-Najjar’s grandfather, Muhammad Yusuf al-Najjar, was a senior member of the Palestinian Black September terror organization (Boss). Muhammad Yusuf Al-Najjar was killed in 1973 by Israeli commandos in Beirut as part of the reprisal operation for the Munich Olympics massacre, where 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were murdered.

Political Career: During Ammar al-Najjar’s  2018 campaign, he ran as a Bernie Sanders-style progressive and received support from some in the local Jewish community who praised his moderate, peace-oriented stance. Electoral History: He ran for Congress multiple times in the San Diego area, including a 2018 loss to Republican incumbent Duncan Hunter and a 2020 campaign, but was unsuccessful in his bids, loser.

Terrorist Muhammad Yusuf al-Najjar, Role in Fatah & PLO: Al-Najjar was an early activist in Fatah and served as the commander of its military wing. In 1968, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Munich Massacre: Israel and various intelligence reports identified him as a primary mastermind and "architect" behind the planning of the 1972 Munich Olympic massacre of Jewish athletes. 

Assassination: On April 10, 1973, Muhammad Yusuf al-Najjar was assassinated by Israeli commandos and Mossad agents in Beirut, Lebanon, during Operation Spring of Youth. The operation, led by future Prime Minister Ehud Barak, targeted top PLO officials as part of a broader retaliation campaign for the Munich massacre. Institutional Ties: Recent reports from 2025 have alleged that al-Najjar was among several founders of Palestinian militant groups who had previously been employees of UNRWA.
