A red notice means Interpol will assist local officers in apprehending a suspect with a view to extradition. The National Police have been tightening their ties to Interpol and frequently use the global police organisation’s public warrants as a tool to hunt international fugitives.

The UAE has 188 outstanding “red notices” on Interpol’s website — more than any other state in the region and the fifth highest number of any country in the world. In contrast, the UK has issued seven, Saudi Arabia one, Oman seven and Rwanda, which is searching for perpetrators of the 1994 genocide, has 77.

A red notice means Interpol will assist local officers in apprehending a suspect with a view to extradition. The UAE has the highest number of public warrants after the United States, which has 378, Belarus, 373, India, 334, and Albania, 267. Rachael Billington, a spokesman for Interpol, said the heavy use of public warrants reflected the UAE’s confidence in the organisation. “The fact that the UAE has so many notices is an indication of their commitment to Interpol.”

Further strengthening the relationship between the Emirates and Interpol is Mubarak al Khaili, the organisation’s assistant director for the Middle East and North Africa, and a former Abu Dhabi police officer from Al Ain. At 30, he is the youngest assistant director at Interpol.

Dubai Police have collaborated with Interpol on two major jewel thefts in the last year. One investigation led to police uncovering an international gang of thieves known as the Pink Panthers. Mr Khaili says the other robbery exemplifies why the UAE, and all Arab nations, should build a strong relationship with Interpol.

In March 2006, two masked thieves rode a motorcycle into jewellery shops at Wafi City and BurJuman malls, stealing jewellery worth Dh10 million (US$2.7 million) and escaping on a flight to Belgrade SERBIA. Mr Khaili said the UAE had never witnessed a crime like it. Three weeks ago Interpol arranged to have Andrea Zevatovic, the alleged mastermind, extradited from Germany to face trial in Dubai. “Without Interpol, these guys would remain unidentified,” Mr Khaili said.

With a large expatriate community and an abundance of wealth, the UAE has become a profitable target for international criminals, he said. This is underlined by the mass of “red notices” the country has issued, 160 of which are for fraud.“The majority of red notices are concerning financial crime. That means in the UAE, we don’t have serious crime,” Mr Khaili said. He said the public warrants have proved “very, very, very effective”.

“We have had a lot of cases already of people being arrested and extradited.”As well as issuing warrants, he said local police collaborated with Interpol to track down fugitives wanted by other nations. “The UAE doesn’t want anybody wanted in other countries to stay in our country.”Mr Khaili said access to international databases was the most valuable benefit of membership of Interpol. They contain everything from details on lost travel documents to DNA.

It is through DNA evidence provided by Dubai Police that Interpol was able to link a separate robbery at Wafi City mall in April 2007 to yet another international ring of thieves. The fugitives, also wanted by Liechtenstein, drove two stolen Audis into the mall, threatened staff with fake guns and escaped with Dh14 million in jewellery. One of the culprits was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a Dubai court on June 8. The other suspects are among the 188 fugitives wanted by the UAE on Interpol’s website.

Fifty-seven of the warrants are for Indians, 19 are for Pakistanis and 15 for Egyptians. Four women are among the wanted. Only one Emirati is on the public list: Jabelas Keeshor Burjraj, 44, who was born in India but is now wanted for fraud by the UAE.

Emad Ayoub, a former Dubai property developer accused of fleeing the country after taking Dh36m of investor’s money, is also on the list. He is believed to be living in Northamptonshire, UK, and could be the first person formally extradited to the UAE from Britain if arrested.

BELGRADE, Serbia (Map, News) - U.S. officials met the parents and lawyer of a Serb basketball player accused of severely beating a schoolmate to urge his return to the United States to face justice, the U.S. embassy said Monday. Interpol has issued a "red warrant" for the arrest of Miladin Kovačević, accused of assaulting a fellow student in the U.S. That effectively means that all the organization's signatory states are obliged to arrest him. Interpol's website states that Kovačevič is wanted for crimes against "life and health". The warrant was issued following a ruling by Broome District Court in Binghamton, New York

Miladin Kovacevic, (DOB June 15th 1987) who played at Binghamton University in upstate New York, is accused of repeatedly kicking fellow student Bryan Steinhauer, 22, in the head during a May 4 fight. Steinhauer remains in critical condition.

The American ambassador to Serbia said Wednesday ,7/16/08, brutally beaten college student, Bryan Steinhauer, was in grim shape and implored the Serbian government to hand over the hulking fugitive charged in the case. Bryan Steinhauer of Brooklyn "weighs less than 99 pounds and is unable to eat" or speak, Ambassador Cameron Munter said in a stinging statement. "He remains in a coma after 2-1/2 months." Munter was countering recent reports in the Serbian media that suggested Steinhauer, 22, was in good condition after he was pummeled on May 4 at a Binghamton University bar, allegedly by Miladin Kovacevic. "This was not an ordinary bar fight," the ambassador said. "As he lay on the floor, Steinhauer was repeatedly kicked in the face and head, to the point where he had multiple fractures on both sides of his face and his skull."

Kovacevic fled to his native Serbia on June 9th 2008 after he was freed on $100,000 bail. That touched off a diplomatic crisis between Serbia and U.S. officials demanding his return. "Representatives from the U.S. Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia met jointly with the parents of Miladin Kovacevic and their attorney on July 6th at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Belgrade," a U.S. Embassy statement said Monday.... "The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the current situation regarding the flight of Miladin Kovacevic, who has been charged with assault in the State of New York and to answer questions from the family regarding the U.S. judicial process and the ramifications for Mr. Kovacevic of his flight from the U.S.," the statement said.

Kovacevic's parents claimed their son is innocent and that Steinhauer started the fight in a drunken state. "He did not hit or kick Bryan Steinhauer," father Petar Kovacevic told reporters in Belgrade, adding that his son just separated others who were involved in the brawl.

Kovacevic's mother Branka, who was in the U.S. when he fled, said that they decided to leave after receiving unspecified "telephone threats." She said that her Serb Thug Son, Miladin Kovacevic, is currently "depressed" and that it was not clear when he would return to normal life (neither will Bryan Steinhauer). She said that her son, who is a student at New York state’s Binghamton University, experienced “serious torture“ while in prison, after being thrown in with “the worst criminals“, and received death threats.

Branka also told reporters that Miladin was also not allowed to talk to a lawyer, and decided to leave the U.S. after receiving threatening phone calls, adding that he is currently “in his place of residence”. “We realized that we had to go. It was better to die on the way or disappear together than to disappear over there,” she said.

New York congressmen have asked
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to pressure Serbia to return him. Last week, the U.S. government asked the Serbian Foreign Ministry to send Kovacevic back to America for trial, but Serbian officials have said they want to see the case against him so they can consider whether he should be tried in a Serb court instead.


Serbia's laws do not allow the extradition of its citizens to the United States. Two Serbian consulate employees in New York were accused of giving Kovacevic emergency travel documents that helped him leave the country.

Meanwhile, two Bosnian nationals accused of taking part in the fight together with Kovacevic will stay in jail for the time being.


Broome County Court Judge Martin Smith wants more information before deciding whether to set bail for Sanel Softic, 21, and Edin Dzubur, 24. They face felony counts of assault and gang assault in connection with the May 4 attack on Steinhauer, who remains in a coma.

Somalia: Pirates in Total Defiance of the UN, Are they funding the Al-Shabaab terror group, Are they actually Al-Shabaab ?

Somalia is not only one of the most dangerous countries in the world due to its long running civil war spanning decades. But to add to this, the waters off the coast of Somalia have become the most treacherous in the world, swarming with well armed pirates searching for prey to hold to ransom. It is barely two weeks after the United Nations Security Council members unanimously adopted a resolution to combat the attacks and hijacking along the coastlines of Somalia, pirates have vowed to shoot down the resolution.

The gangs have said that due to the fact that Somalia is not a member of the Security Council, it would be wrong for the country to agree to such a resolution which the pirates say is a clear breach of the sovereignty of the Horn of Africa country. The gangs mainly have their main bases in the northeastern regions of Somalia, known as Puntland.

For sure, Somali pirates are not a monolithic group, and their relationships to Somalia’s complex field of aspiring rulers — the Baidoa-based transitional government, Ethiopia and the Al Shabaab Islamic group — are complicated. Indeed, some of the Somali Marines that France arrested are related by blood to Somali president Yusuf. Others backed the now-deposed Islamic Courts regime that forms the core of Al Shabaab.

An Islamist insurgency in Somalia has been mounting almost daily attacks on the weak government, which is backed by the United States, because Washington believes the Islamists are associated with al-Qaeda (Al-Shabaab).
The UN says almost two million Somalis desperately need assistance. A small contingent of African Union troops is in Mogadishu but has done little to quell the violence. The talks are being boycotted by the hard-line al-Shabaab militia, blamed for many of the attacks on government troops and their Ethiopian supporters.

The pirates have vowed to resist any move by any Security Council member to invade Somalia, saying such a move would be tantamount to breaching the sovereignty of the conflict-ridden nation. It is however interesting that piracy along the Somali coast acts as a source of economic upkeep catering for a large population of people mainly the jobless residents.

The militias who are a result of lawlessness and unemployment have vested their energies in hijacking ships and vessels in the Indian Ocean waters for huge ransoms.

Helicopter-borne French troops swooped in on Somali pirates in APRIL/08 after they freed 30 hostages from a yacht, seizing six of the hijackers and recovering sacks of money -- apparently ransom paid by the ship's owners.
The pirates had boarded the 288-foot French luxury yacht, capturing its mostly French crew off the coast of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden. Pirates seized more than two dozen vessels off the Somali coast last year.

Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin, chief of staff of France's armed forces, said the pirates released the hostages after negotiating with the ship's owner. That phase of the operation was calm, with no weapons fired, he said. The hostages were brought to safety and the pirates went ashore. After the pirates were on Somali territory, a French attack helicopter chased a vehicle carrying some of them, firing to destroy its engine, the general said.

As many as three pirate gangs have been operating off the coast, and have attacked ships as far as 400 kilometers out to sea. So far this year, over 30 ships have been attacked. Unlike pirates in other parts of the world, who just rob the crew and escape with whatever they can carry, the Somali pirates capture ships and hold them for ransom (to support terrorism). The U.S., Germany and France already have warships north of Somalia, guarding the Djibouti coast and the Gulf of Aden. So far, no nation has offered to go after the Somali pirates. Meanwhile, merchant shipping has been warned to stay at least 400 kilometers from the Somali coast

According to the Netherlands defense ministry, Somali pirates typically try to capture ships to demand ransom money. There is a local coast guard, particularly in the Somali regions of Somaliland and Puntland, but this a "very limited" in size and capability, the ministry says. The 3,025-km. long coastline of Somalia (classified as the most dangerous territory in the world because of its lawlessness, widespread civil war and total anarchy, especially in and around the capital Mogadishu) hosts at least four distinct groups of pirates, says the ministry.

These are organized according to tribal and clan backgrounds and are led by war lords, corrupt business men and even local authorities, says the ministry. Pirate groups are well organized and led from headquarters ashore. To be able to operate far out at sea they increasingly employ mother ships from which they launch small interceptor craft to attack merchant or fishing vessels.
Typical pirate equipment includes communications (radios, satellite phone), radar, assault rifles, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

Al-Qaeda finds three safe havens for terror training, Somalia, Algeria and Pakistan; LONDON TIMES

Al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden’s terrorist organisation, driven out of Afghanistan and defeated in Iraq, is re-emerging in strength in three alternative safe havens for training, operational planning and recruiting – Pakistan, Somalia and Algeria – according to Western intelligence and defence sources.

The core al-Qaeda headquarters in the tribal areas of Pakistan pose the gravest threat to the United Kingdom. But in Somalia (Al-Shabaab) and in Algeria, where the so-called al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb was set up in 2004 as a powerful bin Laden offshoot, the organisation is recruiting energetically and its leaders are believed to have aspirations to hit Western targets.

There has been increasing evidence of bin Laden’s network rebuilding in Pakistan. The main figures are now well entrenched in the tribal areas, and although American Predator and Reaper surveillance drones, armed with Hellfire missiles and precision-guided bombs, remain in the region to eliminate al-Qaeda commanders, it seems the terrorist leaders can still communicate with each other. The 38 countries with troops based in Afghanistan are fighting to prevent al-Qaeda ever again using the country as a safe haven, but the core al-Qaeda leaders have settled down in Pakistan and, from there, keep in contact with their main franchises in Somalia and Algeria. Two al-Qaeda leaders have been killed this year by Predator attacks, and another, Abu Ubaida al-Masri, head of external relations, died of natural causes. But one American estimate is that up to 2,000 militants, many of them foreigners, are in training compounds in Pakistan.

Al-Qaeda also appears not to be short of experienced operational commanders. One senior figure who was responsible for carrying out research into nuclear, chemical and biological systems when the organisation was in Afghanistan, is believed to be involved in trying to produce unconventional weapons to target the West. That is known to be al-Qaeda’s top ambition.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has moved to the front line of terrorist operations, including suicide truck bombings and the murder of European tourists. The nationalist Algerian terrorist group has been converted into an organisation posing a threat beyond Algeria’s borders. American officials estimate that there are between 300 and 400 terrorists in the mountains east of Algiers and another 200 elsewhere in the country.

The same transformation is occurring in Somalia, particularly in the south (Al-Shabaab). A large number of radicalised Somalis are living in Britain and it is feared that instead of going to Pakistan for jihad training, they are travelling to Somalia (hook up with the Al-shabaab group).

In the early hours of a Monday morning, a number of missiles fired from an American naval ship fell on the small Somali town of Dobley. The target according to a US military official, was a "facility where there were known terrorists" affiliated with al-Qaeda. The Monday attack was reminiscent of the January 2007 air strike, which the US carried out against suspected al-Qaida operatives involved in the 1998 US bombings in East Africa. This latest show of US force in the Horn of Africa emphasizes Washington's continued resolve to attack al-Qaida operatives and their bases (Somalia) wherever they are in order to deny them safe havens.

Covert recordings of Melbourne men saying jail would be a ''reward'' for carrying out ''Allah's cause'' showed they were knowingly part of a terrorist group, a Supreme Court jury has heard.

In the first day of closing statements yesterday, Crown prosecutor Richard Maidment, SC, said strong electronic evidence proved the 12 men on trial belonged to a terrorist organisation that was planning violent jihad, including planned attacks against Melbourne train stations and sporting venues that could have killed thousands.

He told the jury that despite the complicated laws, they firstly must be convinced that a terrorist organisation did exist before any of the 12 accused could be found guilty. Abdul Nacer Benbrika (his photo in white), Amer Haddara, Abdullah Merhi, Fadal Sayadi, Hany Taha, Shoue Hammoud, Bassam Raad (his photo grey jacket), Majed Raad, Ahmed Raad (car dealer), Ezzit Raad, Izzydeen Atik, Aimen Joud and Shane Kent have each pleaded not guilty to being a member of a terrorist organisation.

Most are facing extra terrorism charges relating to alleged activities between July 1, 2004, and their arrest in November 2005. Mr Maidment said three of the accused were heavily involved in a stolen car racket to raise funds and buy weapons and chemicals to be used in terrorist acts.

He highlighted several covertly recorded conversations, through phone intercepts and listening devices, that had been played throughout the trial. During a conversation in a garage on September 10, 2004, Ahmed Raad was recorded as saying, ''Imagine going to prison for Allah's cause, every second you are in there is a reward.''

Mr Maidment said the conversation clearly proved the guilt of the three involved because they were aware the proceeds of the stolen car racket would be used for terrorism. ''Here Ahmed Raad (car dealer) is saying 'this is in Allah's cause, we are doing this in Allah's cause to pursue violent jihad','' he said.

''The Crown says that's an important conversation because it really reveals a recognition on the part of all those people that they are part of a terrorist organisation.'' Mr Maidment said when police broke the stolen car ring and arrested members of the group, Benbrika was more worried about whether police knew about the group's true purpose.

He said Benbrika taught his followers that Muslims were obliged to take action because Australia was a land of war. ''It was an obligation to pursue violent jihad ... it was that teaching and that philosophy that underpinned that organisation,'' he said.

Earlier, Mr Maidment said the men came together with a common ideology and the group had a clear structure and purpose. The evidence showed they were training, gathering chemicals and material to attack Melbourne train stations or sporting venues. ''We are seeking to persuade you that the evidence is sufficiently able ... to present a clear picture of the activities they were engaged in,'' he said.

Yet to come are closing addresses by 12 defence counsel and Justice Bernard Bongiorno's direction to the jury.

ALBANIAN MUSLIM MAFIA AND INDIAN MUSLIM MAFIA LINK UP TO CONTROL WORLD'S HEROIN TRADE IN SUPPORT OF TERRORISM (AL-QAEDA).

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has released a report on the heroin trade; "Albania and Kosovo are the heart of the Balkan drug trade route (Albanian Muslim Mafia, Daut Kadrioski) which links Pakistan and Afghanistan (Indian Muslim Mafia, Dawood Ibrahim) with Europe. That route is worth around USD 7bn annually and around 80 percent of the heroin intended for the western European market is smuggled along this route," said a report presented to the U.S. Congress.

The Albanian Muslim Mafia is run by Daut Kadriovski aka Mehmed Haidini (his photo above on L) the reputed boss of one of the 15 Families, embodies the tenacity of the top Kosovar drug traffickers. A Yugoslav Interior Ministry report identifies him as one of Europe's biggest heroin dealers, and Nicovic calls him a "major financial resource for the KLA." Through his family links, Nicovic says, Kadriovski smuggled more than 100 kilos of heroin into New York and Philadelphia, in 1993 he headed for the United States (New York City), where it's believed he continues to operate, moving between Philadelphia, New York City and Northern New Jersey.

The Indian Muslim Mafia is run by Dawood Ibrahim (his photo on R. with sunglasses) and his D' Company are the source of most of the world's heroin. The United States has asked Pakistan to hand over India's 'most wanted' fugitive and international terrorist Dawood Ibrahim for his alleged links to al-Qaeda-related terrorists groups and involvement in the global heroin trade. The FBI and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) have sought assistance from Pakistan's Interior Ministry, Anti-Narcotic Force (ANF) and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to hunt down Dawood in the Islamic nation. In fact, Dawood has been described by American agencies as "an al-Qaeda facilitator now living in Pakistan who has already been placed in the same category as top al-Qaeda operatives with Interpol issuing a special notice against him". According to the DEA, Dawood is involved in large-scale shipment of narcotics (heroin) to the United Kingdom and western Europe (Albanian Mob) and its smuggling routes from South Asia, the Middle East and Africa have shared links with Osama bin Laden's terror network. He is currently on the wanted list of interpol for organised crime and counterfeiting.

This drug warning by UNODC is the latest in a series of alarming reports by a number of agencies in charge of fighting organized crime, including the FBI, Interpol and Europol, which state that the Albanian mafia is the most serious criminal organization in Europe because it controls a huge part of the heroin trade in a number of European state - Switzerland, Greece, Belgium, Austria,

Sweden, the Czech Republic, Norway, and, recently, in Great Britain.

Mogadishu,(insidesomalia.org) - Al-Shabaab an Islamist group in Somalia officially said that they would track American citizens wherever they are, even if they are Aid workers or Journalists.

The message was posted on their website http://kataaib.net/shuhadada%2028-01-2008.html they’ve also issued statements on the website praising Osama Bin Laden and inviting foreign fighters (Al-Qaeda) to come to Somalia. This statement came after American jets strike a house in which their leader was in and killed. The spokesman of Al-Shabaab sheikh Muqtar Robow Abu Mansoor said that they would hunt for Americans whether they are journalists, Aid workers or even ordinary citizens. When he was asked the reason as to why they are not segregating the ordinary cities he said to us the America is America and to them.

Somalis are Somalis, because in the air raid of 1st of May have not sieved our citizens they killed them in mass. “America has bombarded our people and animals, so we have to do the same” said Abu Mansoor the spokesman of Al-Shabaab.

This statement from the Al-Shabaab group coincides with a time when the American troops in the Somali waters carried air raid at Dusamareb town in Galgadud region in central Somalia and killed a top official from the group.

“This group known as al-Shabaab has been designated a foreign terrorist organization after a very careful review of information concerning this group. There are documented indications of their close links to al Qaeda, including a number of senior officials in this group who have trained with al Qaeda. They’ve issued statements praising Osama Bin Laden, inviting foreign fighters to come to Somalia. And so for a host of reasons after a very careful review, this group has been designated a foreign organization by the United States,” "Providing business services, even free ones, to al-Shabaab violates the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) in the US. Each IEEPA violation of carries a fine of up to $250,000."

The man believed to be the head of al-Qaida in Somalia was killed in an airstrike by the US Navy, along with 10 other people. The spokesman for the Islamic al-Shabaab militia, Sheik Muqtar Robow, said the strike killed Aden Hashi Ayro, his brother, another commander and six others at his house in the central Somali town of Dusamareeb, about 300 miles north of Mogadishu.

"Our brother martyr Aden Hashi, has received what he was looking for — death for the sake of Allah — at the hands of the United States," Robow told The Associated Press by phone. "This would not deter us from continuing our holy war against Allah's enemy (USA); we will be on the right way, that is why we are targeted," he added.

Mr. Ayro was one of the most feared and notorious figures in Somalia, a short, wispy man believed to be in his 30s who had gone from lowly car washer to a top terrorist suspect blamed for a string of atrocities, including killing a female BBC journalist, desecrating an Italian graveyard and planning suicide attacks all across Somalia. He was a military commander for the Al-Shabaab, an Islamist militia, which the American government recently classified as a terrorist group, saying it was linked to Al Qaeda.

Over the past year, the U.S. military has attacked several suspected extremists in Somalia when the U.S. Navy fired at least one missile into a southern Somali town. Somali government officials have said Ayro trained in Afghanistan before the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and is the head of al-Qaida's cell in Somalia.

He was a key figure in the al-Shabaab movement, which aims to impose Islamic law and launches daily attacks on the shaky Somali government and their Ethiopian allies. Sheik Muhidin Mohamud Omar, who Robow described as "a top commander" in the Al-Shabab, was also killed. A web site, http://kataaib.net/shuhadada%2028-01-2008.html reportedly owned by the Al-Shabaab group of Somalia (hosted by the Dotster Co in Vancouver WA) had posted a 24 minute recording of what is said to be the voice of its hiding leader Aden Hashi Ayro, who has called for attacks on African Union troops and expressed his wishes of someday beheading women and children in Addis Ababa. Ayro, according to intelligence sources is an Afghan trained (by al-Qaeda) assassin who is also an expert in insurgency tactics.

In recent months, Al-Shabaab, the military wing of the Islamic Courts Union, has spread renewed fear through Mogadishu. Al-Shabab, now an autonomous rebel group which has added an explosive element to the combustible mix of Mogadishu’s militias, enforces strict sharia (Islamic law) and uses tactics imported from the global jihadi movement. As in Afghanistan, those who work or trade with the government risk being branded as spies or collaborators and beheaded as a warning to others.

Journalists are routinely harassed. Editors and broadcasters received a letter from Al-Shabaab last week instructing them to stop referring to the government and to say “puppets” instead. They were told to call dead insurgents “martyrs”.

Will introduce a bill to cancel contracts to train Saudi police and other security forces in US Counterterrorism tactics until the Saudi’s certify the prosecution of Al Qaeda financiers, like Yasin al-Kadi, and the detention of repatriated Guantanamo terrorists that keep being released into the general population after being “rehabilitated.”

10). Will introduce or sponsor a bill to block the sale of sensitive military munitions, especially Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs), to Saudi Arabia.

Miladin Kovacevic (photo) is a Serb from Kula, his two pals, Edi Dzubur, 24, and Sanel Softic, 21, are Bosnian's. A Broome County grand jury, in Binghamton NY, upgraded the charges against Softic and Dzubur to one felony count of first-degree assault and one felony count of gang assault.

During an interview last week, Kovacevic's mother, Branka, accused the family of the beating victim, 135-pound Bryan Steinhauer a Jewish college student from Brooklyn NY, of exaggerating the extent of his injuries to collect more insurance money. (What the hell, because their Jews ?) She said that her son, who is a student at New York state’s Binghamton University, experienced “serious torture“ while in prison, after being thrown in with “the worst criminals“, and received death threats.

The American ambassador to Serbia said Wednesday ,7/16/08, brutally beaten college student, Bryan Steinhauer, was in grim shape and implored the Serbian government to hand over the hulking fugitive charged in the case. Bryan Steinhauer of Brooklyn "weighs less than 99 pounds and is unable to eat" or speak, Ambassador Cameron Munter said in a stinging statement. "He remains in a coma after 2-1/2 months." Munter was countering recent reports in the Serbian media that suggested Steinhauer, 22, was in good condition after he was pummeled on May 4 at a Binghamton University bar, allegedly by Miladin Kovacevic. "This was not an ordinary bar fight," the ambassador said. "As he lay on the floor, Steinhauer was repeatedly kicked in the face and head, to the point where he had multiple fractures on both sides of his face and his skull."

Branka also told reporters that Miladin was also not allowed to talk to a lawyer, and decided to leave the U.S. after receiving threatening phone calls, adding that he is currently “in his place of residence”. “We realized that we had to go. It was better to die on the way or disappear together than to disappear over there,” she said.

One source who knows the family said the headstrong Branka has gotten her son out of local scrapes with the law before he went to Virginia to play high-school basketball, as a teenager he had been picked up by the police in Novi Sad.

In Binghamton, Chris said Kovacevic "was a constant fixture on State Street," where several popular college bars are located, showing up at the "Rat" all the time and ruling the roost.

On the Binghamton University web blog pages there are numerous postings by females who claimed Miladin Kovacevis had sexually and physically assaulted them, but since Binghamton is such a small town with no place to hide, none of the females came forward with complaints to the police.

Meanwhile, it has been widely reported that Kovacevic was bounced off the Binghamton University basketball team not just for being a terrible player but for assaulting a high school recruit.

What Miladin Kovacevis did was way over the top, you don't stomp an unconscious dude unless you want to kill him or make a point, Miladin Kovacevis did both.

Miladin Kovacevic's family is from Kula In Vojvodina Serbia, a city of 43,000 that's about a 90-minute drive north of Belgrade. Kovacevic's father, Peter , is an orthopedic surgeon who spent four years as an army surgeon during the 1990s Bosnian conflict.

Miladin Kovacevic's is believed to be hiding in Serbia, a Serbian newspaper reported Wednesday, 6/25/08, that Kovacevic had been spotted in the northern city of Novi Sad and in his nearby hometown of Kula.

The elder Kovacevic, a giant himself at 6-foot-5, was a supporter of Slobodan "Butcher of the Balkans" Milosevic throughout the tumultuous 1990s that saw the strongman inflict regional and ethnic violence on Serbia's neighbors. He was called the "Butcher of the Balkans" because of the ethnic cleansing campaign, in which Bosnian Serbs (the new super race) systematically killed Bosnian Muslims.

Sources who know the father said he shared many of Milosevic's extreme Serb nationalist views (supremest group) and felt that all the attention being devoted to his son's flight from the law stemmed from prejudice.

Kovacevic's father, Peter said "All around the world, they spread the lies that the Serbs only care about themselves," he told The Post last week. "This is simply not the case. There is a worldwide conspiracy against Serbia and they are always showing us in a bad light."

Peter has many friends throughout Belgrade police and Serbian national law-enforcement authorities, because he is often used as an expert witness in court to describe a crime victim's injuries, sources said. He is now suffering from cancer and failing kidneys that require regular treatments at the Military Hospital in Belgrade.

Kovacevic's mother, Branka, is a 6-foot-1 psychiatrist who also frequently appears as an expert witness on behalf of prosecutors to describe the sanity of defendants or the psychological damage suffered by victims. She also treats her psychiatric clients in the finished basement of their sprawling, ranch-style home.

Meanwhile, more details emerged of the vicious beating the hulking Miladin Kovacevic - nicknamed Minja - and his two pals, Edi Dzubur, 24, and Sanel Softic, 21, who are Bosnian's, allegedly unleashed on Steinhauer at Rathskeller bar in Binghamton, the two men charged in the brutal beating of an upstate New York college student that has gained international attention are now in jail.

Broome County Judge Martin Smith ordered Sanel Softic and Edin Dzubur held pending a July 7 hearing on whether their bail will be increased now that authorities have upgraded the assault charges against them. Both men had been free on $10,000 bail since being charged with beating Bryan Steinhauer, a Binghamton University honors student who has been in a coma since the May 4 attack at a downtown Binghamton bar.

A Broome County grand jury upgraded the charges against Softic and Dzubur to one felony count of first-degree assault and one felony count of gang assault. The charges carry the same penalties as attempted murder, a minimum of five years in state prison.

People who knew Miladin Kovacevic in Binghamton described him as intelligent and a bit of hothead who liked guns and cigars. One of Kovacevic's teammates - who also did not want his name printed - said the massive Serbian could bench press 350 pounds and squat 500 pounds.

"If you saw him, he was a monster," said one fellow student. "No one gave him a problem because of his size. He was huge."Steinhauer, on the other hand, was a quiet honors student who never bothered anybody (5' 6" tall 135 lbs). "He was the nerdy kid who sat in the back of the classroom and nobody really picked on because he didn't bother anyone," one classmate said.
