Detectives say the Second Line gang has for years been one of the most violent groups in Newtown. Members have been charged in four murders and are suspected of dozens of armed robberies. Sarasota detective Kim Laster spent four years investigating the gang, working with the state Attorney General’s Office and state investigators to chronicle the history of its members’ crimes.

Back in May of 2011 the Sarasota Herald Tribune wrote, Newtown public housing redevelopment will continue without the HOPE VI grant, but at a slower pace than hoped. The federal government has for the sixth time snubbed Sarasota in its bid for a multimillion-dollar grant to revamp half-century-old project housing in Newtown, The Courts. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Sarasota would not receive $21 million it requested to raze and rebuild the Orange Avenue and The Courts housing complexes. The grant would have vastly improved Newtown’s public housing that for decades has been plagued by crime and drugs. But housing officials say there is “hope beyond HOPE VI,” the coveted grant that has eluded the city since 1997. Anariest J. Taylor, 17, of 1912 North Orange Avenue, Apt. #20, Sarasota, (Sarasota Public Housing 'The Courts') has been arrested and charged with murder with a firearm following a shooting on Sunday afternoon June 3rd 2018.
