Somalia Al-Shabaab Insurgents Take Over Capital Mogadishu, Photos', Kill Town Mayor Ahmed Magan, Al-Shabaab "Wanted Dead or Alive" US Spec Opps Teams

MOGADISHU, Somalia Jan 7, 2009 (Garowe Online) - At least six soldiers were killed Wednesday in Somalia's war-torn capital Mogadishu after suspected Al-Shabaab insurgents threw hand grenades, Radio Garowe reports, Al-Shabaab terrorists are taking over Mogadishu.

UPDATE...Sunday, January 25, 2009, SOMALI AL-SHABAAB TERRORIST RECRUITING WEBSITE HOSTED IN VANCOUVER WA USA, WWW.KATAAIB.NET APPEARS TO BE SHUT DOWN. The soldiers died in two separate explosions in Mogadishu's Yaaqshiid district, as they were passing through a key intersection at Towfiq.

"There were two explosions, only minutes apart," said a witness, adding: "Four soldiers died in the first explosion and two more died in the second [explosion]."

Witnesses told Mogadishu-based radio stations that at least four Somali government soldiers were wounded in the explosions, which was claimed by Al Shabaab insurgents who run a website based in Vancouver WA.

Yesterday, one peacekeeper was killed and another wounded in a Mogadishu blast, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) confirmed.
Mogadishu has been the scene of targeted explosions since Ethiopian troops invaded the country more than two years ago to assist the weak interim government.

The anti-Ethiopia insurgency has killed upwards of 10,000 people in a series of near-daily attacks, including shootouts, assassinations and roadside bombings.

BELED HAWO, Somalia Jan 9, 2009 (Garowe Online) - The mayor of a provincial capital in southwestern Somalia was killed on Friday by Islamist insurgents, the Al-Shababb terrorists who are linked to Al-Qaeda, Radio Garowe reports.

Ahmed Abdalle Magan, the mayor of Garbaharey town, the regional capital of Gedo, died at the scene after insurgents used a rocket launcher against his vehicle.

"The mayor died after a rocket [shell] hit his car, which also wounded five of his personal guards," said a witness, adding: "Another vehicle escaped the attack." The late mayor was on his way to Dolow, a town along the Somali-Ethiopian border that serves as a major base for Ethiopian troops.

Gedo region has entered a period of instability ever since the Islamist group Al Shabaab seized control of key towns, including Garbaharey and Bardhere.
But Ethiopian-backed warlord Col. Barre Hirale has returned to Gedo in an attempt to violently expel Al Shabaab from the region and has successfully re-captured some towns.

Ethiopia has pledged to withdraw its troops from Somalia in the coming weeks, but the military operation in Gedo region signals that Ethiopia is not prepared to completely pull out of Somalia, where Islamist fighters are positioned to take control. Somalia Pirates Capture Tanks and Global Notice, Al-Shabaab seize The Ro-Ro Cargo Ship "Faina" see photo.

Somalia Pirates Capture Tanks and Global Notice, Al-Shabaab seize The Ro-Ro Cargo Ship "Faina" see photo.
It would be fairly easy for the Al-shabaab terrorists to off-load the 33 T-72 battle tanks, just just pull up to the docks lower the ramp and drive the tanks off the Roll on Roll off cargo ship Faina.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, said he was concerned by the seizure of the military supplies on board the Ukrainian ship. They could be used to destabilise the region, and the whole situation on the high seas is a matter of great concern for all of us," he told reporters in New York before a meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"We are warning France and others who are thinking of carrying out a rescue that we have the power to reach them wherever they are" said Januna Ali Jama alleged spokesman for the pirates (Al-Shabaab). "

The spike in attacks at sea has coincided with a rise in assaults on land by radical al-Shabaab insurgents, including the capture of Somalia's strategic southern port Kismayu. The United States say al-Shabaab is a terrorist group with close ties to al Qaeda. Experts say some of the businessmen and warlords who command the pirates are also funding the rebels. "The entire Somali coastline is now under control of the Islamists," Andrew Mwangura, head of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme, told Reuters in an interview. "According to our information, the money they make from piracy and ransoms goes to support al-Shabaab activities onshore."

Minister of Defense of Ukraine Yuriy Ekhanurov confirmed that the Ro-Ro Cargo Faina ship (click image to enlarge) was captured by pirates and was carrying 33 T-72 tanks and other ammunition sold by the Ukraine, UNIAN news agency reported the minister as saying. All the ammunition was sold by the state-owned Ukrspets export under an international agreement, he said. (See Ro-Ro Cargo Ships).

Besides the tanks, grenade launchers, tank ammunition and other ammo were on the board of the ship. Armoured personnel carriers and munitions are also believed to be part of the delivery. A total of 21 crewmembers were onboard - 17 Ukrainians, three Russians and one Latvian - when the ship was chased down and boarded by armed men in three launches. The coordinates of the ship are available now. The captain of the ship informed Marine Consultations Center in Greece about the intentions of the pirates. Later information was received by central Marine Coordination Center in Odessa and International Marine Bureau.

The Ro-Ro cargo ship Faina left Oktyabrsk port in Nikolaev for Mombasu port in Kenya. The ship reached Suez channel on 15 September. On 25 September, pirates captured the ship Faina (Ukrainian company, manager of ship Tomax Team Inc) under Belize flag near Somali shore. The staff of the ship includes 17 citizens of Ukraine, 3 from Russian Federation and 1 from Latvia.

The ship is a RO/RO carrier with stern ramp. Originally built in Sweden in 1978 as the Vallmo, it has since been through many hands, many flags and many names, including Matina, Loverval, and Marabou. In 2007 it was sold to Redrick Company, Belize, and became Faina.

The "Faina" ship's stern ramp is unlikely to have needed any particular strengthening to carry T-72's as one of the main characteristics of this tank is its extremely light weight of 41 tonnes. In February of this year, the Kenyan authorities seized a shipment of 20 tanks that had been unloaded in Mombasa and that were reportedly headed for the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement.

Somalia: al Shabaab defend attacks on Mogadishu's airport by killing 32 people !

MOGADISHU, Somalia Sep 23 (Garowe Online) - A spokesman for an Islamist terrorist group waging an insurgency in Somalia claimed responsibility for yesterday's mortar attack on the capital Mogadishu's international airport, Radio Garowe reported Tuesday.

Abu Mansu (Photo with Mic), al Shabaab spokesman Muktar Robow "Abu Mansur," the spokesman for al Shabaab, told Mogadishu-based media that the mortar attack "killed many soldiers" after an airplane attempted to land at Aden Adde International Airport. African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeepers protecting the airport responded with an artillery barrage and the Gallad Airlines plane from Puntland landed safely.

[ READ: 32 killed as insurgents target Mogadishu airport]
At least 32 people were killed in some of the worst bombardment in Mogadishu, as street battles raged between al Shabaab insurgents/terrorists and Ethiopian-backed government forces and AMISOM peacekeepers. Abu Mansur said Mogadishu's airport is "used for military purposes and to transport weapons" to the Somali government and its military allies, underscoring the guerrilla group's decision to target the airport with mortars.

Mogadishu-based business groups and the Islamic Courts movement have publicly opposed al Shabaab's decision to target the airport, which has practically brought commercial flights to a virtual standstill since September 16.
"The Djibouti peace talks is not in the Somali people's interest," the al Shabaab spokesman said, adding that it is intended to "weaken the jihad" in Somalia.

IDP camp near Mogadishu Exodus...Hundreds of civilians were reported to be leaving some of Mogadishu's heavy-hit neighborhoods, including Hodan and Howlwadaag districts where many civilians were killed during Monday's bombardment. "I don't know where we are going, but we have to flee before more shells hit us," said a mother of five fleeing her home in Howlwadaag.

Business at the notorious Bakara Market was reportedly slow today, with shop owners and consumers alike mindful of another bombardment of the country's largest marketplace. Upwards of 700,000 people fled Mogadishu since the beginning of the anti-Ethiopia insurgency in January 2007, according to UN figures.

A former Houston man arrested in Kenya has been charged in Texas with teaming with al-Qaida to overthrow the Somali government and form an Islamic state there. Daniel Joseph Maldonado, 28, also known as Daniel Aljughaifi, was ordered held without bail on federal charges of undergoing military training with a terrorist organization and conspiring to use a destructive device. Maldonado’s arrest marks the first criminal prosecution of an American suspected of joining terrorists in Somalia. According to the criminal complaint, Maldonado traveled from Houston to Africa in November 2005. By December 2006, the complaint says, he was in Somalia and had joined with Al-Shabaab and elements of al-Qaida to fight in a rebellion designed to overthrow the Somali government and install an Islamic state.

MALDONADO stated that while residing with the young mujahadin (Al-Shabaab) in Mogadishu, he became aware that a1 Qaeda members were residing and training in the same compound. A Yemeni who personally knew bin Laden, and MALDONADO, participated in nightly gatherings during which stories of bin Laden were told by the Yemeni. MALDONADO identified certain members at the camp as being a1-Qaeda, although he did not know for sure who all of the a1 Qaeda members were. MALDONADO opined that a1 Qaeda fighters were given much more respect than members of the Al-shabaab. During discussions with the young mujahadin, they spoke about conquering Somalia, Ethiopia, and Egypt and making them Islamic states. MALDONADO learned about a major a1 Qaeda operative fighting in the southern part of Somalia whom he did not meet.

The CW (Cooperating Witness) saw an individual who matched the description MALDONADO gave of the "bomb maker." The CW saw that the "bomb maker" had a thick manual with a pink cover that contained information on how to make explosives. The CW saw MALDONADO looking through the book. The CW also saw the "bomb maker" in the possession of an amber colored bottle which the "bomb maker" treated as if it were very fragile. The CW heard the sound of explosions while at the camp. The CW further saw the "bomb maker" in the possession of a granular powder which he described as an explosive, and a hollowed-out AA battery filled with an explosive substance.

Somalia's main international airport remains paralyzed after at least nine people, mostly civilians, were killed in an exchange of fire at the airport in the capital Mogadishu on Friday.

Islamists (Al-Shabaab) took over the airport last Tuesday, barring any aircraft from landing.

A-Shabaab, a group of young Islamists who are waging attacks against the interim government and the Ethiopian army stationed in Somalia, threatened to shoot down any aircraft landing there.

The group said the airport was serving the “occupying forces” such as the Ethiopian army and what they called Somalia’s apostasy government. Nearly 1,600 Ugandan troops and 800 Burundian troops are positioned as peacekeepers at the airport, the only international airport in the capital.

Clashes broke out after a plane carrying supplies for African Union peacekeepers defied the ban and landed in the airport, provoking mortar fire from the rebels. Government forces and their Ethiopian allies responded with machine-gun fire, mortars and missiles.

At least one nearby house was destroyed in the fighting. None of the peacekeepers on board were hurt. Meanwhile, Somalia’s civil aviation authority has warned airlines to stick to their normal schedules or risk losing their licenses.

Somalia has not had a stable government since 1991. Islamists briefly took over the capital and other areas in the center and south of the country for several months before they were ousted by Somali and Ethiopian armed forces in early 2007.

The Islamist rebels have since regrouped and are waging almost daily attacks on Somali forces, Ethiopian troops, foreign aid workers and local civilians. They wish to drive out the Ethiopian forces and topple the interim government. The airport closure is complicating the arrival of much-needed humanitarian aid to Somalia.

Most of the aid arrives by sea, which is an easier way to bring large quantities of supplies, but sea routes to Somalia have also become dangerous to use because of an increasing plague of piracy. Somali pirate (Al-Shabaab)s are holding a record 12 vessels off Somalia's waters as pirates search for opportunities to make profit from ransom money.

Dozens of sea vessels have been hijacked by Somali pirates (Al-Shabaab) since the beginning of the year.

Piracy ransoms funding Somalia insurgency, Al-Shabaab. Sun Aug 24, 2008 7:42am EDT By Daniel Wallis. NAIROBI (Reuters) - An explosion of piracy this month off the coast of Somalia is funding a growing insurgency onshore as the hijackers funnel hefty ransom payments to Islamist rebels, a maritime official said on Sunday. "According to our information, the money they make from piracy and ransoms goes to support al-Shabaab activities onshore, said Mwangura" Piracy has been rife off Somalia since warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. "We will take our orders from Sheik Osama bin Laden because we are his students."Merging with Al Qaeda operatives in the region makes sense, he said, given the recent U.S. crackdown, including a May 1 airstrike that killed ShabaAb's previous commander. Robow declined to comment on the number of foreigners or the size of Shabaab's militia. One analyst recently estimated its forces at 1,000 to 3,000 fighters. Robow also spoke for the first time about eventually expanding ShabAab's activities outside Somalia's borders, saying Americans, even journalists and aid workers, were not immune from attack because of what he called "the aggression of the American government."

In our view: Internet censor

Wednesday, May 07, 2008
A Florida man’s heart might be in the right place, but he is misguided in his bid to get a Vancouver Internet service company to drop a Somali-language Web site (Al-Shabaab
http://www.kataaib.net/ ).

Bill Warner, a Sarasota private investigator (http://www.wbipi.com/ ), wants Dotster Inc. of Vancouver to refuse service to http://www.kataaib.net/ . Warner, who has launched similar purge efforts in other cities with other Internet companies, says http://www.kataaib.net/ supports an al-Qaida organization in Somalia, where war and genocide are tragic facts of daily life. “There are groups like this one that associate with al-Qaida through Web sites that help promote the ideology, help find new recruits and help the effort to support terrorism,” Warner said in a Tuesday Columbian story by Courtney Sherwood. “It’s not freedom of speech. This site should not be hosted in Vancouver.”

Certainly the world has changed since 9/11, and we don’t fault any citizen for being alert to signs of possible terrorism. But the line separating suspicion (and the alerting of authorities) from vigilantism and paranoia gets blurry fast, as it did in World War II when the U.S. government rounded up 120,000 Japanese Americans on the West Coast and put them in camps, for fear they would assist the Axis countries.Dotster, which employs about 100 here and has clients worldwide, already works closely with the FBI and other law-enforcement agencies, says its CEO, Clint Page.

Dotster has more than 3 million domain names under its management, each with numerous Web pages. About once a week, Page told us, Dotster discovers one with questionable content, such as child pornography, anti-Semitism, credit card scams or possible terrorist sympathies. In other instances, authorities discover them first and come to Dotster. Closing a site before the FBI has finished probing it might actually impede an investigation.“We have a close relationship with all law enforcement,” said Page, who in the late 1980s was vice president of the Columbia River Economic Development Council in Vancouver.

“We routinely go to authorities with complaints.”Two of the most common, Page said, are child porn Web pages originating in the former Soviet Union and illegal gambling pages out of China.Without subpoenas, Dotster is limited in what it may legally provide authorities, but, Page says, the company is as helpful as it may be under the law. With subpoenas, which it does get on occasion, Dotster provides even more information.“We cooperate as fully as we legally can as soon as we can,” he said. “A lot of times these Web sites are fleeting — shut down shortly after they are activated.”Another problem with Warner’s approach is the danger of it leading to abuses.

If Web service is denied because of protests from concerned citizens, what would be next after kataaib.net? Political-advocacy pages? The ACLU? The National Rifle Association? Minor political parties?“We can’t just arbitrarily go in and shut down sites based on what someone finds offensive,” Page said.C ertainly a Web page that is intended to inspire terrorism should be probed and be a candidate for closure. But the FBI or other experts should make that decision, with a judge if that’s required by law. It’s not Warner’s call.

A Florida man’s heart might be in the right place, but he is misguided in his bid to get a Vancouver Internet service company to drop a Somali-language Web site. Bill Warner, a Sarasota private investigator (www.wbipi.com ), wants Dotster Inc. of Vancouver to refuse service to kataaib.net (Al-SHABAAB). Warner, who has launched similar purge efforts in other cities with other Internet companies, says kataaib.net supports an al-Qaida organization in Somalia (AL-SHABAAB), where war and genocide are tragic facts of daily life.
Al-Shabaab has kidnapped journalist Amanda Lindhout, now what is your stance, "The Columbian Newspaper" ?.

Amanda Lindhout, who has been based in Baghdad, had been on a tour through Africa to put together freelance reports for a French television network. She had been hoping to sell her stories to Canadian broadcasters, as well. "I work with a team of professionals that I have hired locally, and I have packaged together several 2.5-min reports from Ethiopia and Kenya," Ms. Lindhout wrote to Global National in a recent e-mail. "Next week I am going to Somalia to report on the deteriorating security situation as well as the food crisis which has affected 2.6 million there."

Ms. Lindhout has also worked in Iraq as the Baghdad correspondent for an Iranian television broadcaster, but quit in May to work as a freelancer. The last entry on her Facebook social networking page, posted Friday, said, "Livin' it up in Mogadishu Somalia"

The reporters, their Somali driver and two Somali guards were abducted on the way to see people displaced by the violence in Mogadishu and now living outside the city, said Abdihakim Haji, the brother-in-law of Abdifatah Elmi, one of the two guards.

Haji said he knew about the abduction because it occurred while he was talking to Elmi on his cell phone during the trip to Elasha, about 18 kilometers (11 miles) southwest of Mogadishu. About halfway there, "I heard a voice ordering them to turn the car in a different direction," Haji said, recalling his last conversation he had with his brother-in-law.

"My brother, in a low tone, was trying not to answer my inquires, but made me understood that they were caught in a difficult situation. I realized that things had changed and then their voices disappeared," Haji said in a telephone interview from Mogadishu.

Abdi Haji Gobdon, a government spokesman, said Somalia's government was trying to find out where the journalists were being held captive. He could not identify them or confirm the information that Nor and Haji had provided.
"Once we get information where they are, we will take measures, be it force or negotiations. We will try to ensure the safety and release of the journalists," Gobdon told The Associated Press.

Journalists and humanitarian workers are frequently abducted for ransoms in Somalia, one of the world's poorest and most war-torn countries. Foreign and local workers generally travel in convoys heavily guarded by freelance militiamen. Saturday's reported abduction came during a period of widespread violence in Somalia.

In the worst attack, Islamic militants, Al-Shabaab, said Saturday they have seized control of Kismayo, Somalia's third largest city, after fighting that left about 70 people dead.

Kismayu - Bodies littered the streets of this strategic southern port in Somalia on Saturday, a day after it was seized by Islamist rebels in fighting that killed at least 70 people.

The loss of Kismayu to the al-Shabaab insurgents was another blow for Somalia's interim government, which signed a peace deal with some opposition figures last week that has only seemed to stoke violence in the Horn of Africa nation.

"We are now collecting the corpses lying in the streets," resident Mohamed Farah, 55, told Reuters. "The town is calm today and we're busy burying the victims of the fighting. The Islamists are at the abandoned sea and air ports, and people here are hoping to reopen their businesses."

Since the start of last year, al-Shabaab rebels have been waging an Iraq-style insurgency of mortar attacks, roadside bombings and assassinations, targeting the fragile administration and its Ethiopian military allies. The artillery and gun battles that broke out on Wednesday around Kismayu were the heaviest in the area for months. Medical workers said at least 140 people had been wounded.

Unidentified aircraft
Fearful residents said large, unidentified aircraft had been flying over the area since then. "We don't know what will happen, but we are scared," said another local man, Hussein Ahmed, 35. It was not clear who sent the planes. The United States, which has launched air strikes inside Somalia in recent months, officially listed al-Shabaab earlier this year as a terrorist organisation with close ties to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda.

Washington sees Somalia as a training ground for extremists and says that radical Islamist leaders have made much of it a safe haven for high level suspects, including the bombers of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania a decade ago. The violence in Somalia has killed more than 8 000 civilians and uprooted 1 million since the beginning of 2007, when government forces backed by Ethiopian tanks and warplanes drove a sharia courts group out of the capital Mogadishu. On Monday, UN-led talks in Djibouti produced a tentative peace agreement between the government and some opposition figures. But the deal had already been rejected by al-Shabaab commanders and other opposition hardliners.

Many in Kismayu fear the pro-government clan militia that fled the town on Friday might soon try to regroup to retake it. "The capture of Kismayu by al-Shabaab may bring us a new disaster," Fatuma Mohamud, a local mother-of-four, told Reuters. "We're afraid our town will become like Mogadishu, where explosions and hit-and-run attacks are order of the day."

Florida man’s heart might be in the right place, but he is misguided in his bid to get a Vancouver Internet service company to drop a Somali-language Web site.

“There are groups like this one that associate with al-Qaida through Web sites that help promote the ideology, help find new recruits and help the effort to support terrorism,” Warner said in a Tuesday Columbian story by Courtney Sherwood. “It’s not freedom of speech. This site (AL-SHABAAB) should not be hosted in Vancouver".

Certainly the world has changed since 9/11, and we don’t fault any citizen for being alert to signs of possible terrorism. But the line separating suspicion (and the alerting of authorities) from vigilantism and paranoia gets blurry fast, as it did in World War II when the U.S. government rounded up 120,000 Japanese Americans on the West Coast and put them in camps, for fear they would assist the Axis countries. Dotster, which employs about 100 here and has clients worldwide, already works closely with the FBI and other law-enforcement agencies, says its CEO, Clint Page.

“We routinely go to authorities with complaints.”Two of the most common, Page said, are child porn Web pages originating in the former Soviet Union and illegal gambling pages out of China.
Without subpoenas, Dotster is limited in what it may legally provide authorities, but, Page says, the company is as helpful as it may be under the law. With subpoenas, which it does get on occasion, Dotster provides even more information.“We cooperate as fully as we legally can as soon as we can,” he said. “A lot of times these Web sites are fleeting — shut down shortly after they are activated.”

Another problem with Warner’s approach is the danger of it leading to abuses. If Web service is denied because of protests from concerned citizens, what would be next after kataaib.net ? Political-advocacy pages? The ACLU? The National Rifle Association? Minor political parties?“We can’t just arbitrarily go in and shut down sites based on what someone finds offensive,” Page said.
Certainly a
Web page that is intended to inspire terrorism should be probed and be a candidate for closure. But the FBI or other experts should make that decision, with a judge if that’s required by law........... It’s not Warner’s call.

Bodies litter streets of Somali city, Al-Shabaab terrorist head hunters run wild and Al-Shabaab (Al-Qaeda) has a website hosted in Vancouver WA, USA.

Bodies litter streets of Somali city. Resident says there are 6 bodies in front of her home. Violence comes after Islamic group Al-Shabaab takes port city of Kismayo.

(CNN) -- Bodies littered the streets of the third largest city in Somalia on Friday after Islamic fighters took control of the city, residents said. Fighters from the armed Islamic group Al Shabaab took control of Kismayo, a port city in southern Somalia of 700,000, after fighting between tribal militias. Kismayo is 28 miles southwest of Somalia's capital of Mogadishu.
Halimo Mohamed Hassan, a mother in Kismayo's Alaney neighborhood, said six bodies were in front of her house.

"Kismayu is under our control. We overpowered them and concluded the fighting," Sheikh Mukhtar Robow, the al-Shabaab spokesman, told Reuters by telephone. Since the start of last year, al-Shabaab rebels have been waging an Iraq-style insurgency of mortar attacks, roadside bombings and assassinations, targeting the fragile interim administration and its Ethiopian military allies. This year, Washington officially listed al-Shabaab as a terrorist organisation with close ties to al Qaeda.

Mosque, market become 'human butcher houses'
MOGADISHU, Somalia (CNN) -- Heavy shelling struck Somalia's capital city on Thursday, leaving pools of blood around a neighborhood mosque, a devastated market and 11 civilians dead, according to witnesses and a local journalist

Many of the dead were preparing for prayers at the Abu Hureyra mosque, which was packed with worshippers, according to Sheikh Abdullahi Omar, whose leg was wounded by shrapnel fro the al-Shabaab terrorists.

"Body parts of the worshippers are scattered all over," he said. Local photo journalist Hassan Ahmed Haji rushed to the the mosque after the apparent mortar shell blast and saw six bodies. He said it was a frightening scene.
Mogadishu's main market also came under attack, as vendors fled for their lives amid a continuous barrage of shelling that left five dead, witnesses told Haji.

"Bakaraha market has turned into a human butcher house today," said Hawa Hamud Abdi, a meat trader who survived the attack. She said a mother and child were among those killed. She spoke as mortar shells and artillery fire rained down on the market.

Clashes between Islamic insurgents of the Al-Shabaab and Somali and Ethiopian soldiers (backed by the USA) also raged around Suuqa Holaha, a neighborhood in northeast Mogadishu. Fighting also continued in Folarensa junction, an intersection near the presidential palace.

"From 9 a.m. this morning, the fighting has intensified, with both sides using a lot of heavy guns including anti-aircraft guns," she said. "My children and I took cover under our beds and we stayed for three hours, till the situation subsided."

Hassan said heavily-armed Islamist militias remained on the streets, and the rival clan militia are rumored to have left the city in defeat. "There is (a) very harsh humanitarian crisis in the city," said Ali Bashi Abdullahi Igal, head of Fanole human rights group. "The fighting has displaced more than 5,500 people from the city."

Fifteen civilians were killed on Friday, he said, including a mother and her two children, ages 3 and 5, who were crushed in their house when it collapsed under heavy anti-aircraft fire. More than 70 people were killed and 168 wounded in three days of heavy fighting between Al Shabaab and tribal militias. "We are condemning this inhumane acts of violence," Igal said. "Both sides have breached the international laws."

There is a lack of medical care for the wounded, with only one doctor and two nurses at the city's only operational hospital, he said. Civilians are "suffering at the hospital," Igal said.

MOST WANTED TERRORIST FAZUL A. MOHAMMED ESCAPES KENYAN POLICE RAID, HE LINKS TO AL-SHABAAB GROUP WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE.

Kenyan police say Al Qaeda's Fazul escapes raid; Celestine Achieng Sunday, August 03/08
MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - One of Africa's most wanted al Qaeda operatives, sought for his role in the bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, has narrowly escaped capture in Kenya, police said on Sunday. Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, high on Washington's list of terrorist suspects, left a home in the Indian Ocean resort of Malindi late on Saturday just minutes before officers crashed through the door, police said.

"We sealed off the whole area and had sea and land patrols but unfortunately, Fazul got leakage of the intended raid and escaped," said one senior detective who asked not to be named. "We are still looking for him."

The United States has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of the Comorian, who speaks five languages (French, Swahili, Arabic, English, Comoran) and is said to be a master of disguise, forgery and bomb making. He is accused of playing a lead role in the 1998 embassy attacks in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam Kenya, which killed 240 people. Kenyan police said they found two passports believed to belong to Mohammed and arrested two people, including the owner of the home, which is near the Malindi district hospital. Fazul Abdullah Mohammed was indicted in the Southern District of New York, for his alleged involvement in the bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, on August 7, 1998. The Rewards For Justice Program, United States Department of State, is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information leading directly to the apprehension (Dead or Alive) or conviction of Fazul Abdullah Mohammed. Mohammed likes to wear baseball caps and tends to dress casually. He is very good with computers.

Another police source said more than 50 officers took part in the raid, and that Mohammed appeared to have been staying at the house for several days. "Our intelligence reports show that he came into the country from Somalia (HE IS LINKED TO THE AL-SHABAAB TERROR GROUP, WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE) to seek medical attention because of a kidney condition," the source told Reuters.

Washington says several al Qaeda men involved in the embassy bombings have sought sanctuary in neighbouring Somalia, where Islamist insurgents (Al-Shabaab terror group) are fighting a weak Western-backed administration.

The U.S. military has launched several air strikes targeting them in the Horn of Africa (THE AL-SHABAAB TERROR GROUP, WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE) since the start of last year.
