The fourth generation (C4) Chevrolet Corvette was introduced for the 1984 production year, replacing the long-in-the-tooth C3 that had bowed out in 1982. There was no 1983 production model year for the Corvette, several prototypes were manufactured but not sold. Production of the C4 was actually pushed back, from the fall of 1982 to January of 1983, and as a result, the C4 was introduced as an early 1984 model-year car. Chevrolet built a number of prototypes and pilot cars in 1983 to test the fourth generation Corvette before it hit production.
