Monday May 20 2019 SARASOTA HERALD TRIBUNE WRITES: A third-grade student from Brentwood Elementary School was struck and killed about 7:48 a.m. Monday morning while riding his bicycle to school. Roman Miller, 9, trailed behind his sister as they crossed Webber Street and Nodosa Drive. According to Florida Highway Patrol trooper Kenn Watson, a Chevy Silverado was stopped at the stop sign on Nodosa Drive. The driver, Charity Lamb, 25, saw the young girl go by, but not Roman, according to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol. As Roman was crossing, Lamb drove her pickup past the stop sign, striking the boy and dragging him approximately 15 feet, FHP reported. His sister, a fifth-grader at the school, made it across safely.
This is a residential neighborhood, so everyone should be driving fairly slow. The bottom line is we come to that stop sign, we make assumptions because it’s a quiet neighborhood and it’s just one cycle,” Watson said. “We have to watch out for children, like I said, things are going to only get more congested as these kids get out of school. We as adults have to be looking out for them and need to be making decisions.” Watson added that the bicyclists had the right-of-way, and that there were no traffic cameras in the area. After being transported by ambulance, Roman was pronounced dead at Doctors Hospital in Sarasota by Dr. Michelle Chan at 8:37 a.m., FHP reported. Lamb has a history of driving citations. Since 2011, she’s been issued separate citations for careless driving, running a stop sign and a red light. She’s also been cited for driving over the speed limit and driving on a suspended license.
