Times Square New Years Festivities Have Been Target For Bombings Dating Back to 1982 with F.A.L.N. Puerto Rican Terrorists. Anthony Senft, a retired New York PD Detective lost an eye and both eardrums in a bombing attack led by the FALN on New Year's Eve in 1982. FALN Puerto Rican terrorists were behind the bombing of the New York Police Department headquarters, two Federal office buildings on Wall St in Manhattan and the Federal Courthouse in Brooklyn within a 90 minute period. The Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (English: Armed Forces of National Liberation, FALN) was a Puerto Rican clandestine paramilitary terrorist organization that, through direct action, advocated complete independence for Puerto Rico. It carried out more than 130 bomb attacks in the United States between 1974 and 1983, including a 1975 bombing of the Fraunces Tavern in New York City that killed four people and the New Years Eve 1982 bombing of NYPD headquarters.

New York Daily News reported on December 30th, 2018: Third-generation NYPD grad Christopher Senft wants to follow in dad and granddad's footsteps with the Bomb Squad. Police Officer Christopher Senft, 21, followed in the footsteps of his father Brian Senft, 49, and grandfather Anthony Senft, 72, both bomb squad vets. Anthony Senft, who attended the graduation ceremony, was critically injured when a bomb planted by the Puerto Rican separatist group FALN exploded near the red abstract sculpture in front of police headquarters on New Year’s Eve 1982. As Police Commissioner James O’Neill told it, Officer Rocco Pascarella was working security when a first bomb in a discarded food container exploded. Senft and Detective Salvatore Pastorella from the Bomb Squad rushed to the scene. They found two other suspicious packages, and the second exploded.

New York Times reported on January 3rd, 1983: Federal and city investigators said yesterday that a Puerto Rican terrorist group was apparently responsible for a series of bombings on New Year's Eve that rocked four government buildings in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn and seriously injured three police officers. The blasts, which struck Police Headquarters and two Federal office buildings in Manhattan and the Federal Courthouse in Brooklyn during a 90-minute period on December 31st, 1982, severed a leg of one officer and injured the eyes of two bomb squad detectives. The detectives, one of whom also lost all the fingers on his right hand and may have been deafened, were felled when one of the bombs blew up in their faces. They might have been killed had they not been wearing armored suits, the police said. A fifth bomb, made of four sticks of dynamite, was found in lower Manhattan and dismantled before it exploded.
Puerto Rican Armed Forces of National Liberation (FALN) which utilizes Marxist-Leninist ideology is linked to Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) a Marxist terrorist organization in Ramallah West Bank which is also associated with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Authorities said the explosions were believed set by the F.A.L.N. - Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional, or Armed Forces of National Liberation Puerto Rico -which has claimed responsibility for some 100 bombings that have killed six people in an eight-year campaign of terror in the name of Puerto Rican independence. Police Commissioner Robert J. McGuire said that at 10:20 P.M., after three of the bombs had exploded, a man called WCBS Radio and said: ''This is the F.A.L.N. We are responsible for the bombings in New York City today. Free Puerto Rico. Free all political prisoners and prisoners of war.''The caller hung up after making the statement, which was recorded, the commissioner said. Shortly afterward, at 10:27 P.M., a man called The Associated Press in New York City and claimed that the Palestine Liberation Organization was responsible for the bombings and that two more bombs would go off within an hour, Commissioner McGuire said. F.A.L.N.-Type Explosives. As word of the blasts spread, the Police Department received scores of calls warning that bombs had been planted in various locations in the city, including in the midst of the huge crowd of revelers gathered in Times Square for the New Year's Eve celebration.
