While they were on the way, they learned it involved a stabbing. Witnesses say the employee, a 57-year-old woman, was trying to stop a suspect, Corey D. Scogin, DOB 08/31/86, from shoplifting when he stabbed her in the back of the neck. They say he then stabbed himself several times before he ran off and headed south on Maceachen Boulevard toward an apartment complex in Sarasota. Deputies arrested the suspect and a K-9 unit found the knife used during the incident at a nearby tennis court. The suspect and the victim were taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. They are both in stable condition.
However, while the bizarre incident at the Bee Ridge Road store was first dispatched at approximately 10:13 a.m. as stemming from a possible shoplifting incident, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office later updated the report as a "random" stabbing. "Despite the initial 911 call for service indicating that the suspect had 'shoplifted,' no theft actually occurred or was in progress. This incident was strictly a stabbing," the agency said. "The incident does appear to be random." The dirtball suspect was identified as Corey D. Scogin, DOB 08/31/86, of 4663 Hunter Ridge Drive, Sarasota Fl, he was in the Publix store almost everyday to buy cigarettes. He had been working across the street as a Stocker Sales Associate at the Walmart Neighborhood Store before he was fired. He faces one count of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon charge.
