AIKEN, S.C. — An Aiken police officer was killed and another officer was injured in a shootout following a traffic stop at an apartment complex, police said. A suspect wounded in the shooting was taken to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta for treatment, said Lisa Hintz, assistant director for Aiken Rescue. There was no word on the suspect's condition. The shooting happened at an apartment complex around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, 12/20/2011, Lt. David Turno said.
Master Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson, 33, died from his wounds, Turno said in a statement early Wednesday. Officer Travis Griffin, 28, was treated and released after his bullet-proof vest took the gunshot in the chest and prevented serious injury. Workers at the Aiken Rescue headquarters heard about a dozen shots, Hintz said.
