Offense: Attempted 1st Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer w/Firearm
LAKELAND; A Lakeland police officer was shot Sunday night in the Crystal Lake area and suffered what a police official described as a life-threatening injury. Emergency responders rushed Officer Arnulfo Chrispin, 25, to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He underwent surgery early Monday, said Lakeland police Chief Lisa Womack.
The shooting occurred about 10:15 p.m. on the 1600 block of Crystal Grove Drive near an apartment complex. Womack said Chrispin was patrolling the area and stopped to make contact with three suspicious black males. One was wearing a red shirt and another was wearing a “shiny” shirt.
A second officer arrived at the area about 10:22 p.m. and found the wounded officer unresponsive, Womack said. The suspects had fled. A hunt for suspects was under way early Monday.
Twelve local agencies, including the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were helping Lakeland Police the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Winter Haven Police, Bartow Police, Haines City Police and Tampa Police in the search for the suspect, which lasted for nearly 10 hours.
Police initially were searching for three suspects, but they located two of them. Those two people are cooperating with police and are no longer considered suspects. Officials said Williams turned himself in after talking to his mother. His mother was with police at the time, in an attempt to help bring her son in, see Bay News 9 Report at link CLICK HERE.
