OAKLAND -- The Oakland branch of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement held an organizing conference Saturday to discuss police brutality, a proposed juvenile hall, environmental justice and an economy that they said has pushed black people out of Oakland. But each speaker who took the podium during the bulk of the six-hour conference ultimately turned the talk to the Sept. 11 attacks on the East Coast.

"September 11 came along and reminded everyone in this country that what goes on around the world can affect your life right here," said Omali Yeshitela (aka Joe Waller), chairman of the African People's Socialist Party and leader of the Uhuru Movement. What's going on, Yeshitela and other conference speakers said, is a growing, worldwide resentment of U.S. global capitalism and its effect on the poor in many countries and resentment over our support of Israel. (what the hell?)

Conference speakers questioned the tactics of the terrorists but said America, its system and policies are to blame for the attacks, and that the Bush administration's war on terrorism would be used as an excuse to attack civil liberties and blacks themselves.

"This has nothing to do with terrorism. This has to do with stopping dissent,"  Waller said about the Bush administration's freezing of assets of alleged supporters of terrorism. Waller called the flag-waving by many Americans "white nationalism". "The attack on Africans is right below the surface," he said. "You've got to count on the fact that they're coming for us next."

Black Power in the ’60s plants seed for Uhuru Movement. It was in 1968, while in prison, that UHURU boss Chairman Omali Yeshitela aka Joe Waller organized the Junta of Militant Organizations (JOMO), a Black Power Organization similar in goals and structure to the Black Panther Party which was growing in influence in California and the northern cities of the U.S.

More than 100 police from various state and federal agencies were also held off outside his home for several hours.
