Bookstore employees in Greater Victoria are being asked to be on the lookout for one of America's most wanted fugitives — a Boston mobster who has been on the run for 15 years. At age 80, James J. "Whitey" Bulger has appeared on the U.S.'s Federal Bureau of Investigation's famous Ten Most Wanted Fugitive list — right underneath Osama bin Laden — for more than a decade.
The Boston mobster is wanted for a long list of crimes that includes 19 homicides, racketeering and conspiracy to commit money laundering, and extortion. For the past 15 years police have been close to catching him, but the elusive Bulger has always been one step ahead of them, FBI special agent Gayle Marson Kevitch said.
Where's the crime section? Now FBI agents believe Bulger could be in B.C. and might turn up at some in some unlikely place for a suspected mobster.
"Bulger is an avid reader with an interest in history. He is known to frequent libraries and historic sites," according the FBI website. A $2-million US reward has been offered for information leading directly to his arrest.
Bulger and his much younger companion, Catherine Elizabeth Greig, love walking on beaches and are very gregarious, Kevitch said. Kevitch warned anyone who may have seen the pair to avoid contact and alert authorities.
Victoria Canada bookshops watch for 'FBI Most Wanted' mobster Whitey Bulger as "SNOWBIRDS" head North for the Spring/Summer Seasons.
I have been following the saga of Whitey Bulger and Catherine Greig for at least 10 years. I had been aware that Bulger had contacts in Florida and owned a condo in Clearwater Fl (60 miles North of me) and had several bank accounts in Florida along with safety deposit box’s and had made Florida a vacation destination prior to his hitting the road for good in 1995.
BOSTON GLOBE..Bulger's longtime girlfriend, 67-year-old Teresa Stanley told a Florida jury that during her 30 years of living with the South Boston gangster she called him by another name: Charlie. I referred to him as Charlie, actually, but sometimes called him Jimmy," said Stanley. Stanley, who was subpoenaed to testify by the defense, recounted leaving Boston abruptly just before Christmas 1994 on a whirlwind cross-country trek that marked the beginning of Bulger's life on the run.
(DID BULGER PLANT MONEY IN SAFE DEPOSIT BOX'S DURING THIS TRIP, Forbes: Wandering Whitey Bulger worth up to $50 million; Now South Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger - if he’s ever caught - can boast he was named one of Forbes.com’s “World’s 10 Most Wanted” criminal masterminds.)
Teresa Stanley recounted that she was Christmas shopping at Neiman Marcus in Boston's Copley Square when Bulger told her it was time to go. "He just said we were going to go away on a little trip,'' Stanley said. Initially, Stanley testified that Bulger drove them in his Mercury Grand Marquis from Boston to New York, Florida, Elvis's Graceland home in Memphis, New Orleans, the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and west to San Francisco. Years later, she said she learned Bulger was cheating on her with Greig, another longtime steady girlfriend. SEE BOSTON GLOBE ARTICLE.
By posting my findings on my websites (3) in conjunction with FBI reports and Boston Globe articles I have been able to get emails and phone calls from people who have made reported sightings to the FBI, most of the time the people are contacting me because the FBI treated them with disinterest and they want to rant.
My profile of Whitey Bulger and Catherine Greig indicates that they follow the Sun, that they are “Snowbirds” who travel South in the Winter and North in the Spring/Summer seasons and blend in with the white hair crowd, Bulger is a creature of habit at his age of 80 and would follow a pattern of travel as he did in 1994 with Teresa Stanley.
I have had two individuals who own RV Parks, (one in South Carolina and one in Florida) contact me and give detailed descriptions of Bulger and Greig, what most peeked my interest from these two individuals is the description of Bulger’s “deadly cold eyes” watching everything they did. FBI Most Wanted “Whitey” Bulger And Catherine Greig Reported Using a Luxury Motor Home to Travel From State to State With Their Two Dogs.
Vancouver Island, Victoria, the Gulf Islands RV PARKS; Open Dates: Apr 1 - Oct 31, 2010.
The recent reports that Bulger and Greig could be in the Victoria Island area are dead on with the “Snowbird” profile and the time of the year (Spring 2010) and also the abundance of RV parks in the area, see list at link, most are on the water-beach areas which Bulger and Greig seek, RV PARKS VICTORIA ISLAND
One more very important aspect of the Bulger-Greig profile is their impassioned love of dogs, they both have owned multiple dogs in the past, the use of a RV would facilitate having dogs on the road, no problems with motels (one RV park owner claimed they had two small dogs).
"Bulger has been known to alter his appearance through the use of disguises. He has travelled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Canada and Mexico," she said. "We actually have found various safe deposit boxes containing such things as money and identification. We also know that he had many aliases. This is one of the reasons that it's somewhat challenging to find Mr. Bulger," Kevitch said.
Life of crime; Bulger, seen walking with mob pals above, is described as Caucasian, elderly, five-foot eight, 155 pounds, with silver hair and blue eyes. His criminal career began with his arrest in 1943 at the age of 14 as a member of juvenile street gang in Boston known as the Shamrocks.
During his numerous stints in jail, he was reportedly used as a research subject by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in LSD mind-control experiments, and also served time in the infamous Alcatraz Island prison in San Francisco Bay.
He's been featured more than a dozen times on the U.S. television show America's Most Wanted since he became a fugitive in 1995. As a key player in several decades of violent gang warfare in the Boston area, Bulger has been the subject of numerous books and televisions shows. In the film, The Departed, Jack Nicholson played an Irish mobster modelled after Bulger.
THE GLOBE AND MAIL...Victoria area put on alert for book-loving ex-mobster, FBI asks booksellers to be on the lookout for one of America’s most wanted.
Vancouver Island bibliophiles beware: That unassuming elderly gentleman browsing through the bookshelves next to you could be one of America’s most wanted criminals.
Several Greater Victoria booksellers confirmed Monday April 12th, 2010, that FBI agents have visited their stores in the past week and asked staff to be on the lookout for 80-year-old James J. (Whitey) Bulger, a known book lover and former Boston mobster with a long list of brutal crimes on his rap sheet.
“They came into the store and dropped off a picture, which is in our staff room and not to be seen by the general public,” said Jim Munro, owner of Munro’s Books in downtown Victoria.
“It’s totally bizarre. The guy’s 80 years old and the photographs that we have are at least 20 years old.”(see enhanced photos above of Bulger) Described on the FBI website as the leader of Boston’s notorious Winter Hill Gang, Mr. Bulger is wanted for a variety of mob-related crimes including racketeering, money laundering, drug trafficking, extortion and as many as 19 murders.
