Nigerian Charged Over Christmas 'Bomb Plot' Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab had TATP and PETN a "Mother of Satan Bomb" a weapon of mass destruction.

Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, 23, had previously been charged with trying to set off explosives on board a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. He has now also been indicted on six counts, including the attempted murder of the other 289 passengers and crew on board the plane, by a US grand jury. Court documents accused him of "carrying a concealed bomb" inside his clothing on board Northwest Flight 253.

"The bomb consisted of a device containing Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN), Triacetone Triperoxide (TATP) and other ingredients," the charge sheet said, adding that both substances were highly explosive.  Explosives allegedly in pants, TATP and PETN a "Mother of Satan Bomb".

"The bomb was designed to allow defendant Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab to detonate it at a time of his choosing, and to thereby cause an explosion aboard Flight 253." Mutallab faces life imprisonment if convicted of the charge of trying to use a weapon of mass destruction, the US Department of Justice said.

Two charges of possession of a firearm carry a mandatory jail term of 30 years. "This investigation is fast-paced, global and ongoing, and it has already yielded valuable intelligence that we will follow wherever it leads," Attorney General Eric Holder said, more from this source..............

CNN NEWS JAN 6th, 2010…The suspect in the failed Christmas Day bombing of a U.S. airliner faces a six-count federal indictment issued Wednesday, including an attempt to murder the other 289 people aboard.

The seven-page indictment charges Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction; attempted murder within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; willful attempt to destroy and wreck an aircraft within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; willfully placing a destructive device in, upon and in proximity to an aircraft within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; and two counts of possession of a firearm/destructive in furtherance of a crime of violence.


The TATP in Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab device was “blended” with an explosive called PETN, or pentaerythritol tetranitrate, which can be ignited with a normal cigarette lighter. PETN is a key ingredient of Semtex, the Czech-made military explosive used to down Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. “These bombs are sophisticated devices,” said a British intelligence official. “They would have been difficult and dangerous to produce. Apparently, the sniffers at the airport might be able to detect PETN, RDX, and Semtex(Semtex is made of PETN and another plastic explosive known as RDX). If convicted, the 23-year-old Nigerian national faces a sentence of life in prison. The indictment said AbdulMutallab boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on December 25, carrying a concealed bomb concealed in his clothing and designed to be detonated “at a time of his choosing.”
TATP has been cited in several terrorism cases. Najibullah Zazi, the 24-year-old Afghan citizen and U.S. resident who was arrested in September and accused of planning to carry out terrorist acts in the United States, was allegedly trying to make TATP in his motel room in Denver, Colorado.
