FOX NEWS.. FBI Warns of Possible Terror Plot Against New York City Subway During Holidays

Federal authorities are warning of a possible Al Qaeda orchestrated terror plot against New York City subway and other transit systems during the holidays, FOX News has confirmed. The potential threat in the FBI memo is "plausible but unsubstantiated," does not extend beyond NYC.

The FBI and the Department of
Homeland Security issued a joint bulletin late Tuesday night to local and state law enforcement authorities about the possible plot, a homeland security official told FOX.

The report states that in late September, Al Qaeda may have talked about attacking transit systems in and around New York City during the holiday season.

"These discussions reportedly involved the use of suicide bombers or explosives placed on subway/passenger rail systems," the bulletin says. The FBI said it had no indication that any such plot was beyond the very earliest stages of planning.

"We have no specific details to confirm that this plot has developed beyond aspirational planning, but we are issuing this warning out of concern that such an attack could possibly be conducted during the forthcoming holiday season," states the warning, which is dated Tuesday.

The FBI's source reportedly told agents of an al Qaeda-connected group's desire to place bombs or suicide bombers inside the first and last Long Island Rail Road commuter cars and detonate them as the train entered Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan (SEE MAP-RED 1,2,3,9 LINE), also used by the Washington-New York-Boston Amtrak system and the New York City subway. The Red 1,2,3,9 Line would also access Subway Stations at Wall St, Chambers St (WTC), Canal St, Penn Sta, and Times Square Sta..

While federal agencies regularly issue all sorts of advisory warnings, the language of this one is particularly blunt. Intelligence and homeland security officials are working with local authorities to try to corroborate the information "and will continue to investigate every possible lead," the memo says.

Photo is from Brooklyn Heights on Clark St. across the street from the Clark St. Subway Station entrance, just a quick subway ride on the Red 2,3 Line (4 min) to the Wall Street Sta. in Manhattan. Clark St. Station has acess to the whole subway system, also a great place to do surveillance from the Fulton Ferry Park of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan across the East River.

I walked around one day last summer and took surveillance photos of the Brooklyn Bridge and street access to the bridge, the subway stations at Clark St, Penn Sta, and Wall St, rode the lines on the map shown above and took surveillance photos of inside the cars and inside the subway stations, nobody cared.
14 terror suspects held as Spanish police raid mosque, Subway System was Target.
Police raided the Torek Bin Ziad Mosque, Barcelona. Those arrested on suspicion of planning a attack on the city’s public transportation system (Subways) had intended to carry out suicide bombings.

Police confiscated material for making bombs, including four timing devices. Local news reports said the police had also taken phone records from the mosques and bakery.

Photographs of material found in the raids included the timing devices, a small bag of ball-bearings, batteries and cables". According to court documents, the Barcelona group was led by Maroof Ahmed Mirza, 38, and Mohammad Ayud Elahi Bibi, 36, both Pakistanis and the members most well versed in Islam. Hafeez Ahmed, 39, a Pakistani who spent five months in Pakistan last year, was alleged to be in charge of making and handling explosives.
New York subway system vulnerable to a gas attack. Al-Mubtakkar, a crude hydrogen cyanide dispersal device, has been reproduced on numerous al-Qaeda websites since late 2005. It now appears to be nearly identical to the device intended for use in the aborted 2003 plot to attack the New York City subway system with chemical weapons (CW)

"[A joint Saudi-US counterterrorist unit] found it [in a jihadist apartment in Saudi Arabia]: plans for construction of a device called a mubtakkar.

It is a fearful thing, and quite real....a delivery system for a widely available combination of chemicals--sodium cyanide, which is used as rat poison and metal cleanser, and hydrogen, which is everywhere. The combination of the two creates hydrogen cyanide, a colorless, highly volatile liquid that is soluble and stable in water. It has a faint odor, like peach kernels or bitter almonds. When it is turned into gas and inhaled, it is lethal.

For years, figuring out how to deliver this combination of chemicals as a gas has been something of a holy grail for terrorists....Mubtakkar means "invention" in Arabic, "the initiative" in Farsi. The device is a bit of both. It's a canister with two interior containers: sodium cyanide is in one; a hydrogen product, like hydrochloric acid, in the other; and a fuse breaks the seal between them.
The fuse can be activated remotely--as bombs are triggered by cell phones--breaking the seal, creating the gas, which is then released. Hydrogen cyanide gas is a blood agent, which means it poisons cells by preventing them from being able to utilize oxygen carried in the blood.
