MOGADISHU, Aug. 3/08 -- At least 15 people, including 13 women cleaners and two men, were killed and more than 40 others wounded on Sunday after a roadside bomb exploded at a street in the north of the Somali capital Mogadishu, witnesses and hospital sources said. "At least 10 of the more than fifty women cleaners died instantly after the bomb exploded shortly before they were to start work," Mohamed Dahir, an eyewitness, told Xinhua. "Many others including some men were also severely wounded in the explosion." Witnesses described an especially grisly and panicked scene on Sunday after a street sweeper accidentally tripped a large roadside bomb. The blast rocked a busy road between the Ambassador hotel and the Haji Pasto Garage. The road where they were working is a main route for Somali and Ethiopian troops in the southern part of the city where most Ethiopian soldiers are stationed. Al-Shabaab have been at the forefront of an Iraq-style insurgency targeting the government with assassinations, mortar strikes and roadside bombs. The group vowed to retaliate after their leader, Aden Hashi Ayro, thought to be al Qaeda's leader in Somalia, was killed in a U.S. air strike in May /08.
Health officials at Mogadishu's main Medina hospital said that they were inundated with injured people, adding that nearly 22 have so far been brought to the hospital. "This is not what I have ever seen before. Most of the wounded people are dismembered," Dr. Dahir Dheere, a senior doctor and manager of Medina hospital told Xinhua.
The huge explosion occurred in the Somali government quarter in the north of Mogadishu in the early hours of the morning and the explosion could be heard around the restive coastal capital. Witnesses said people rushed to the scene to help the injured and regroup the dismembered limbs of the dead as well as the injured.
"The survivors helped to identify the limbs of the dead and the injured by the clothes and shoes they were wearing," another eyewitness told Xinhua.
"Limbs, body parts and blood were strewn in a wide area and we have to collect them from yards away," the witness said.
This is the second time that street cleaners were killed in a bomb explosion. Five were killed early last year after a bomb exploded as they were sweeping streets in the south of Mogadishu (Al-Shabaab terror group responsible).
The explosion came as political crises in Somalia is deepening with two thirds ministers of the Somali cabinet resigning after Somali Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein sacked the Mayor of Mogadishu who said he has been reinstated by the president of the country.
The attacks follow a period of relative calm after a peace agreement was signed last month. But the agreement between the government and some elements of the Islamic insurgency has also fueled power struggles on both sides of the conflict. Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys a hardline leader of Al-Shabaab, who rejected the deal seized control of the Islamist resistance from a more moderate leader last week.... Al Shabaab was initially set up to protect leaders and group members of the Somali Islamic Courts and to carry our assassinations of foreign targets. Recently killed Al-Shabaab leader Aden Ayro (by a US Missile fired from Tampa Fl) was hand picked to go to Afghanistan by Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys. Aweys was the leader of the Shura Islamic Courts Union of Somalia. This group aim is to create am Islamic state in Somalia that is ruled by Islamic sharia law. Aweys is believed to be part of the group that carried out the bombings of the two U.S. Embassys in 1998 that killed hundreds.
Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys is a leader of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group and he is al-Qaeda. On November 7, 2001, Aweys was named a supporter of terrorism in a supplement of Executive Order 13224 of United States President George W. Bush. Hassan Aweys is also on the terrorist list of the United States Department of State.
FOLLWING QUOTE FROM AL-SHABAAB WEBSITE 5 DAYS BEFORE BOMBING.
The movement of Al-Shabaab does not meet with the apostasy groups, nor hold meetings with them, nor reach agreements with them. The only thing that can take place between us is for us to slaughter them (severing their heads), until they make Towba, for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said “Kill he who changes his religion.”
We are stressing once again that the reports that some of the media stations in Mogadishu have released of meetings of such kind that have taken place in Hudur are all lies, and there are no generals from Al-Shabaab who have met with the apostasy groups there, nor is there anyone from the movement of Al-Shabaab who has told the media outlets such information.
Somali militant group claims bombing of Ethiopians

MOGADISHU, Feb 7/08 (Reuters) - A militant Somali Islamist group linked to al Qaeda claimed responsibility on Thursday for bombings that killed at least 20 Ethiopian immigrants in a northern Somali port earlier this week. Regional officials confirmed that the al Shabaab militant group was responsible for the blasts on Tuesday night in the port of Bosasso in an area where Ethiopian immigrants congregate. Close to 100 people were wounded.
Ethiopia's military is helping the interim Somali government fight Islamist-led guerrillas in Mogadishu, and the rebels have long exploited the traditional rivalry between Muslim Somalia and the Horn of Africa neighbour seen as Christian-led. The attack happened in the semi-autonomous northern Puntland region, a relatively peaceful part of Somalia that is home to President Abdullahi Yusuf and an ally. The al Shabaab, in a message posted on their Web site, said the attack had targeted Ethiopian soldiers and that some of their wives and children had been killed.
"This is a message to the Puntland authority which had extended a welcome and showed affection to the long-time enemy Ethiopians," the Web site, www.kataaib.net , said. "Al Shabaab is informing Muslim society to keep away from the infidels of Ethiopia whether they are in military dress or not."
In a separate incident 8/02/08, Islamic insurgents (Al-Shabaab head hunters) attacked the bases of Somali government troops and their Ethiopian allies in north Mogadishu's Towfiq neighborhood overnight. Resident Mohamed Deq said he saw the bodies of three government soldiers lying in the street. The attacks follow a period of relative calm after a peace agreement was signed last month. But the agreement between the government and some elements of the Islamic insurgency has also fueled power struggles on both sides of the conflict.
