U.S. HARBOURING AL QAEDA, HEZBOLLAH WEBSITES ON HOME TURF (NO KIDDING)

US harbouring Al Qaeda, Hezbollah websites on home turf. Washington, May 2008: The United States might be waging the most relentless battle against terrorism, but its own soil is hosting dozens of websites of groups like Al Qaeda, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah. Researchers made this startling discovery after being commissioned by NATO officials to study the shadowy cyberspace activity of the most dangerous organisations. Although FBI has shut down a few websites, it is still feared that terrorists could coordinate and mount a 9/11-scale attack through them, warned Niv Ahituv of the Netvision Institute of Internet Studies (NIIS) and Tel Aviv University. "These websites are targeting Muslim mothers in America, Canada, the UK and all over the world, convincing them that being shahid or a suicide bomber is particularly good and very important for their sons," added Ahituv.

Available in English, Arabic, Spanish and other languages, the websites also provide tutorials on bomb building and enlist impressionable American and British Muslim women and men into a life of terror activity. The study said Islamic Jihad operates 15 websites in Arabic and English, hosted by both US and Canadian companies. Hamas operates 20 websites in eight languages, a portion of which are based in the US and Canada, while Hezbollah operates 20 websites, also hosted by companies in the US and Canada. These findings were presented in Berlin to a closed audience of high-ranking NATO representatives in February. Paradoxically, "America's First Amendment protects these websites from being shut down," said Ahituv, recognizing the irony of waging a war on terror when some of the most dangerous propaganda is being created at home. NIIS had organized a workshop on terrorist groups and the Internet for North American Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Interdisciplinary Center for Technology Analysis & Forecasting. Technical University of Berlin also participated in the workshop.

Do Cybersleuths Fight Terrorism or Cause Trouble? Jun 19th 2008 Howard Altman is the Courts and Cops Team Leader/Editor for The Tampa Tribune. If you haven't noticed, YouTube features much more troubling fare than old clips of "The Muppet Show" and comedy routines about the history of dance. Jihadi fighters regularly post deaths of U.S. soldiers, assassinations of civilians and other images intended to encourage violence against the West. In late May, Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn) called for Google to take down these videos that include incendiary speeches by al-Qaida leadership."Islamist terrorist organizations use YouTube to disseminate their propaganda, enlist followers, and provide weapons training," the senator wrote in a letter to Google. "YouTube also, unwittingly, permits Islamist terrorist groups to maintain an active, pervasive, and amplified voice."
Responding on the YouTube blog, the editors thanked the senator for alerting them to videos that violated their policies, but stopped short of removing videos that don't have violence or hate speech: "[R}ather than stifle debate we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds."YouTube may be the biggest site where pro-jihadi videos are posted, but it's far from the only one.
Mr. Jenvey and other cybersleuths have "done some real work that has had some real results."Working as a private investigator in Sarasota, Fla., Bill Warner spends part of his day chasing errant spouses and the rest of his time tracking down jihadis. Playing a game of Internet Whack-a-Mole, Bill Warner has helped take down nine jihadi Web sites in the past six months, including one of the most important, Alhesbah, a principal forum for supporters of al-Qaida. Jihad Cybersleuth PI Bill Warner Sarasota Fl.
"I started with the Islamic Thinkers Society site in June of 2005, before it became all private and password protected," recalls PI Bill Warner. "I downloaded a lot of their information and photos posted of U.S. servicemen being killed or their bodies mutilated after a firefight in Iraq or Afghanistan. I know what is posted on these Web sites; they need to be shut down," says PI Bill Warner.  Beyond patriotism, cybersleuths state four main reasons for getting involved in the fight:
1). Disruption of jihadi Web activities--

2). Intelligence gathering--
3). Amateurs are not bound by the legal restrictions governments are-- 4). Western governments aren't doing enough--
"The propaganda war is being fought by al-Qaida and its affiliates on the Internet, and the USA hasn't even stepped onto the court," cautions PI Bill Warner. Pro al-Qaida Web sites are filled with more than anti-U.S., Israel and Christian vitriol. There are beheading videos, images of American vehicles being blown up in Iraq and Afghanistan, calls for the slaughter of U.S. and Israeli citizens and predictions of imminent terror attacks. Bill Warner's frustration with government "inaction" has inspired him to take the fight into his own hands by tracking Web sites and getting IP providers to shut down online terrorist destinations.
Cybersleuths like Bill Warner have infiltrated well-funded jihadi Web sites and wrought havoc. He says cybersleuths like him are stepping up to a job the government should be doing. "You cannot have a forum up, spreading information about how to behave like a terrorist, hoping to catch someone by luck."Shutting down the sites accomplishes two main goals, government investigators say.-- Disrupting jihadi operations-- Reducing propaganda and recruitment".
